Head Trauma, Parkinson's DiseaseIt starts to paint a clear picture when we see all of the former athletes who are dealing with Parkinson’s disease. For example, Ben Petrick who was a catcher for the Colorado Rockies is now fighting with this debilitating illness. The condition forced him into an early retirement at the age of 27. He now coaches baseball in Oregon.

Parkinson’s is a debilitating condition that about 1.5 million US citizens share in common. The disease severely reduces dopamine levels by attacking brain cells responsible for the production of this important chemical. Dopamine is responsible for the movement of muscles. That is why a patient with Parkinson’s will begin to deal with rigidity and tremors that increase as the disease progresses. Eventually, the disease can affect all aspects of movement from walking to opening the mouth to speak.

Petrick suffered from numerous concussions over the course of his career. This is most common for catchers in baseball, but it is a very common injury in other sports such as football, boxing, and hockey. Most players will not even report a minor head injury to avoid losing playing time, but there is really no such thing as a minor injury to the head. As a result of concussions, Parkinson’s is a typical result for athletes.

A Natural Treatment Option for Parkinson’s

While there is no medication that can reverse or cure Parkinson’s, there is a drug-free treatment that is helping many. This is the form of treatment we offer at Advanced Spinal Care – upper cervical chiropractic.

When head injuries occur the C1 and C2 vertebrae are often knocked out of alignment. Using the NUCCA technique, we diagnose and treat such misalignments on a case by case basis. Once the misalignment is corrected, the proper flow of blood and spinal fluid can be resumed. This can help many different types of neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.
