Migraines can leave their victims with little energy for days at a time. As many as 39 million men, women, and children in the USA and 1 billion people worldwide suffer from migraines. Around 10% of school-age children have migraines, and this percentage increases with age. However, what causes migraines remains a mystery among the medical community.

During research, it has been discovered that there are certain external factors that contribute to the pain of migraines. By trying to define what these triggers are and then avoiding them, some have been able to have fewer migraines overall. What are some triggers to look for when it comes to migraines?

• Allergies to certain foods: Often it is chemical preservatives that trigger migraines. This is true for about 30% of people. For example, aged cheeses, aspartame, MSG, pepperoni, hot dogs, and alcohol may be a problem.
• Stress: When you are stressed, certain chemicals in the brain are released, leading to a vascular response as our bodies begin to go into defense mode. This is similar to what happens when bacteria and viruses try to enter your body.
• Caffeine: Too little or too much caffeine can be a problem. If you are a regular coffee drinker, you may notice a migraine coming on if you have not had your daily drink. This can also be true if you drink too much coffee and have a lot of caffeine in your system.

Finding the Root Cause of Migraines
