Post-concussion syndrome is a condition that persists after a concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury has occurred, commonly due to a blow to the head. Some of its symptoms last for weeks or months after the damage that caused the concussion, including headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. It can also appear with violent shaking and movement of the body or head.

Younger age and prior history of headaches are some of the risk factors of post-concussion syndrome. Women and older patients are also more vulnerable to have post-concussion symptoms.

Symptoms of Post-concussion Syndrome

Concussion-related symptoms are categorized into four areas – physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep. Some of them are:

The symptoms can begin instantly after the head injury or can occur months later.  This is vital information to consider as many times people notice a sudden change in personality or lack of energy in sufferers after much time has passed.

There are various balance and neurocognitive tests to catch the problem early on, but currently, there are no objective markers to diagnose post-concussion syndrome. The illness is detected through the symptoms reported by patients. Treatment recommendations given to patients are also very few like resting, discontinuing activities, and waiting until the symptoms go away.

Effective Care for Post-concussion Syndrome

Medical researcher and physician Dr. Justin Schallmann has met many sports players suffering from post-concussion syndrome, and he expressed dismay over the lack of a definite cure in our current healthcare system. As an upper cervical chiropractic specialist, Dr. Schallmann is dedicated to evaluating patients who are suffering from symptoms resulting from head trauma, and he passionately advocates for upper cervical specific chiropractic care. By adjusting the misalignment in the upper neck, it reduces the inflammation in the nerves which triggers the pain and neurological symptoms of post-concussion syndrome listed above. Through upper cervical chiropractic care, Dr. Schallmann has been able to help young athletes get their life back!

Here at Advanced Spinal Care in Redwood City, California, we aim for the same for our patients, particularly athletes and people who have been in accidents. Call us and let us help you recover from the effects of post-concussion syndrome.

a-natural-way-to-get-back-on-your-feet-after-a-concussionPost-concussion syndrome is associated with a variety of symptoms that could occur  after a head injury has taken place. The symptoms are a combination of physical and cognitive issues lasting long after they should have diminished.  In the days after a concussion, normal experiences consist of headaches, dizziness, sleep disturbances, and poor memory or concentration. For those with post-concussion syndrome, the symptoms stay for longer than normal, and will often increase in severity instead of improving over time.

The nervous system goes into a state of elevated awareness following a head injury.  The brain and nerve pathways that sense pain and are responsible for sensations of dizziness are more sensitive than usual. During this time, these signals, even mild ones, are amplified when received by the brain. Time normally brings with it healing and recovery for most injuries. However, if people have post-concussion syndrome, they stay stuck in in this state of heightened awareness, and it could even grow worse.

There is a potential solution for people suffering from these symptoms, even if its been weeks or years since their head trauma. Upper cervical chiropractors specialize in the care and details of the upper spine, which directly affects the central nervous system any time it is out of order.

At Advanced Spinal Care in Redwood City, California, we understand that the nervous system pathways and their ability to function normally is related to correct alignment of the bones in the top part of the neck.  Often, the injury that has caused the concussion has also shifted the uppermost vertebrae in the neck. We use a gentle and precision adjustment technique that properly aligns the upper vertebrae and enables the body to continue in its natural healing process. Many of our concussion patients are able to experience relief from their symptoms after receiving our care.

post-concussion-syndrome-what-is-it-what-do-you-do-for-itPost-concussion syndrome follows a concussion. Concussions happen every day and not just to athletes. You can get a concussion by being in a car accident or having some type of blow to the head. You may have no visible bruises or cuts. This is because a concussion happens to the brain. The CDC reports traumatic brain injuries to account for 30 percent of all deaths from injury. Concussions are very common. In fact, some estimates say that a brain injury occurs every 21 seconds in the USA.

What Are the Symptoms of Post-Concussion Syndrome?

After you have endured a head injury, you may notice you feel a little dazed or even sluggish and tired. You may have more obvious symptoms of headaches, blurry vision, and vomiting. Brain injuries are quite serious. However, the majority of people recover well from them in just a few weeks. For others though, symptoms can persist for quite a long time after the initial injury. This is where post-concussion syndrome comes into play. Symptoms, if not cared for, can continue to last for many months or even up to a year or longer.

What Do You Do for Post-Concussion Syndrome?

Experiencing a concussion has most likely done some type of damage to the delicate structures of the spine, particularly the neck. The C1, or atlas bone, may be the source of your problems. If this bone has moved out of place, it may be putting the brainstem under stress, irritating the nerves, muscles, blood vessels, and other tissues of the neck. This may be why you are still experiencing problems.

Upper cervical chiropractors specialize in making sure back and neck bones are in proper alignment. If they are not, we use a low impact readjustment that does not require us to pop or crack the spine or neck. Rather, we focus on getting the bones of the neck to move back into place on their own. This results in a longer-lasting adjustment and can bring you relief from post-concussion syndrome.

better-understanding-concussions-and-where-to-find-helpConcussions are not well understood. They often occur after a sports-related injury or accident. As many as 2.8 million people in the USA suffer from concussions. And it has recently been discovered that concussions can lead to psychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and irritability. You might feel frustrated because your MRI may have come back normal, but you know something is not quite right. Well, be reassured that it is not all in your head. In fact, it may actually be in your neck. Conventional MRI results may show up as normal even though you are suffering from a concussion.

When it comes to sporting events, the emphasis is now being placed, more than ever, on educating coaches and players to know what to look for when it comes to concussions. Examinations are also being done at the beginning of each season to be used as a baseline for comparison later on in the season when a player is injured. The following symptoms should not be ignored:

Finding Help for Concussions

Here at Advanced Spinal Care in Redwood City, California, we understand the importance of a properly aligned C1 and C2 vertebrae to the overall health of the body. These bones can easily come misaligned due to a trauma to the head or neck, which often happens during sporting events. These bones were designed to protect the brainstem. However, if they misalign, they actually put the brainstem under stress and cause it to malfunction. The brainstem is part of the central nervous system. Therefore, if it malfunctions, all kinds of problems can ensue.

We use a gentle method to encourage the bones of the neck to realign themselves. This does not require us to pop or crack the neck or spine. Once corrected, the body can heal from the damage done, communication to the brain can be restored, and you may begin feeling back to your old self, or even better!

post-concussion-syndrome-occurs-after-mild-head-traumaPost-concussion syndrome (PCS) comes about after enduring a head trauma. It may surprise you to learn that the injury does not have to be major to cause PCS. As many as 2 million people in the United States have head injuries every year, and 85 percent are considered minor injuries. Doctors may diagnose you with post-concussion syndrome if you have very severe symptoms. But, it is important to recognize that even mild traumas can lead to major problems later in life if not properly cared for. If you have been in an accident or endured some kind of head trauma and are beginning to experience health problems, even if it was many years ago, you may have PCS.

The following are common symptoms of post-concussion syndrome:

Finding Relief for Post-Concussion Syndrome

If you or someone you love has endured any type of head or neck injury, it is a good idea to seek the care of a professional. After emergency care is finished, a good second step is to make an appointment to see an upper cervical chiropractor, such as those here at Advanced Spinal Care in Redwood City, California.

We know the importance of the proper alignment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae. If these bones are misaligned by even a quarter of a millimeter, the entire body can suffer the consequences. These bones often move out of place if one suffers a blow to the head or a vehicle accident. They are often the reasons for the symptoms of PCS. This is because a misalignment here puts the brainstem under stress. The brainstem has the vital job of making sure the following things are functioning properly:

Using a gentle precise method, we encourage these bones to move back into place naturally. This often leads to a reduction or elimination of PCS symptoms.

Concussion, Head Trauma, Headache, Head Pain, Post-Concussion Syndrome, Post Concussion Syndrome, Post - Concussion Syndrome, Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, MTBJA concussion or traumatic brain injury can alter the way the brain works. This can be temporary or permanent. Some symptoms of concussions are:

It is entirely possible for a person to get a concussion and not lose consciousness, resulting in some people having endured a concussion and not even realizing it.

What Causes Concussions?

When you think of someone getting a concussion, often the first thing that pops into your mind is playing sports, especially contact sports such as football. However, other things can also cause a concussion: any type of blow to the head or violently shaking the head or the upper body. Children are often involved in playing sports, and they are often the victims of concussions. It is important for parents to be aware of this and keep a close eye on their children as the signs and symptoms are not always noticeable. Evidence suggests that people who endure repeated concussions over the course of their life may develop permanent problems with their cognitive function.

Getting Immediate Help for Concussions is Vital

When people get a concussion, they are often in some type of traumatic event involving the head. Therefore, this puts the upper cervical spine at risk for misalignments. Even if the misalignment is as small as a ¼ of a millimeter, it can create major problems throughout the body. It can impact the way that the body heals and functions.

Here at Advanced Spinal Care in Redwood City, California, we have been specially trained to find these tiny misalignments through the use of specific measurements and scientific methods along with the aid of imaging technology. Once we discover where they are located, we use a gentle method tailored to each of our patients to help correct the problem. This does not involve popping or cracking the spine. It has been seen to take care of many of the issues associated with concussions, such as headaches, and helps prevent problems later in life.

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, texting When one receives a blow to the head, it may result in experiencing a concussion. If symptoms do not go away after a few days, the patient may be suffering from post-concussion syndrome. This is usually due to someone having repeated trauma to the head or neck, such as occurs with those who play contact sports. A dangerous condition can ensue when one suffers from repeated concussions referred to as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Sadly, this is not able to be officially diagnosed until an autopsy is performed.

Does CTE Really Exist?

There is much debate whether or not CTE actually exists. An article reported on in the Chicago Sun-Times took a look at two opposing positions.

Robert Stern, from Boston University, noted the leading experts around the world do not question the existence of CTE. He pointed to a number of studies that have been conducted analyzing the brains of 85 people who had died. Out of these 85, 64 were athletes who were involved in sports the caused repeated brain trauma. It was pointed out 68 out of the 85 showed signs of CTE and the degeneration that accompanies it.

From the opposite viewpoint, Christopher Randolph said the study showed only that something was changed in the brains of these people, and it had uncertain clinical significance. This, he states, does not prove CTE exists, and more studies must be done to confirm it.

What can we learn from this? Even though researchers do not agree entirely, what they do acknowledge is that repeated blows to the head and neck put one at further risk for damage to the brain.

Taking Care of Concussions

If one has suspicions that a concussion has occurred, or if a serious blow to the head or neck has happened, one of the best sources to seek care is from an upper cervical chiropractor. Here at our Redwood City, California practice, we examine a patient’s neck for damage and work to correct it quickly and gently so damage does not progress. Once the misalignment is corrected, a person can have peace of mind, knowing that the best care possible is being administered.

Concussion, Head Trauma, Headache, Head Pain, Post-Concussion Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injury, Traumatic Brain InjuriesWhat Is a Concussion?

The term mild traumatic brain injury, or MBTI, refers to a concussion. Trauma that causes this to happen can vary. Injury to the brain will be dependent on a number of factors, such as how hard and where the hit happened. After an incident occurs, there are a host of symptoms that may be experienced. Each individual experience varies. For example, some may lose consciousness while others may experience periods of being dazed or disoriented.

While these are some common effects noted among those with head trauma, there is quite an extensive list of other symptoms. Here are some of those:

Sometimes manifestation of the effects of a concussion occur later after the incident. This could be days, weeks, months, or even years after. This fact underscores the importance of taking care of the injury immediately to ward off unwanted effects that could present themselves later on.

The reasons for these types of symptoms and why they manifest later on has to do with the brain and the injury. For instance, if the blow resulted in the misalignment of the upper cervical vertebrae in the neck, a number of things could take place. Misalignment of the upper vertebrae, even by a fraction of a millimeter, can hinder blood and oxygen flow, impede nerve communication between the brain and the body, and cause other interruptions to normal and vital processes. If you have experienced a concussion, having the neck analyzed for proper alignment could result in quick relief from current symptoms and prevent future ones from popping up.

Head Injury, Concussion, MTBI, PCS, Head TraumaMany people think that only pro boxers or football players end up with traumatic brain injuries. This is not the case. Falling down a few stairs, slipping on wet pavement, or tripping over something can also give you a head injury. Automobile accidents are another cause, especially if you hit your head. Physical altercations or abuse can be another reason one may have suffered a head injury resulting in post-concussive syndrome. What is this condition?

Symptoms of Post-Concussive Syndrome

These symptoms usually start within a few days of the injury and can last for many months or even a year. If you or someone you love is experiencing these symptoms, what can you do?

Treatment for Serious Head Injuries

Your medical doctor will begin by giving you medication to treat the symptoms. This will include medicine to treat pain, headaches, and dizziness. Sometimes medication for depression or anxiety is given to treat the emotional symptoms. However, nothing is done to treat the structural damage that was caused to your neck during the injury. Many of the above-mentioned symptoms are due to neurological damage.

When you hit your head, many times a misalignment in your neck occurs. This is at the area of the upper neck where the skull and spine meet. IT is called the upper cervical area, and this is the part of the body that protects the brainstem. When undue pressure is put on this area of the spinal cord, it results in symptoms of post-concussive syndrome.

Upper cervical chiropractors, such as Dr. Pete Tsiglieris of Redwood City, California, are trained to detect misalignments in this area of the neck. They can then gently and effectively begin to correct the problems associated with the head injury, relieving you of your symptoms. When your head and neck are back into alignment, function of the brainstem is restored. This decreases pain and brings your entire body back into balance. Why not make an appointment with Dr. Tsiglieris, and let him help you regain control of your life?

Sports, Injury, Concussion, Contact Sports, Head Trauma, Neck Injury, MTBIIf your child loves sports, there are some facts you should be aware of. Some of the most common sports for children to get injuries in are lacrosse, hockey, football, soccer, rugby, basketball, or any other contact sport. It does not take a huge blow or injury for a child to get post-concussive syndrome. What is this and how serious is it?

The Mayo Clinic defines a concussion as a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) that occurs from a blow to the head. It can be caused by a fall, physical abuse or fighting, a car accident, or a sports injury. You do not have to lose consciousness to be diagnosed with a concussion. Post-concussive syndrome comes on after the injury. It will usually occur within the first 7-10 days. Generally, symptoms will not last past three months, although some cases have gone on for a year or more.

What You Need to Know

If your child has suffered an injury from playing sports, you must keep in mind that a blow to the head is related to injury to the neck. Injury to the neck can cause problems related to the brainstem and spinal cord. Communication between the brain and the body is diminished, and it can cause lingering problems that go on after the injury. This is post-concussive syndrome. It shows up as headaches, problems concentrating, behavioral problems, and more. If you are noticing these things suddenly coming on in your child and they play sports, it is possible they have suffered an injury.

What Now?

It is important that you get your child evaluated by an upper cervical chiropractor, such as Dr. Pete Tsiglieris of Redwood City, California. Dr. Tsiglieris is specially trained to detect these misalignments in the neck. He will use 3-dimensional x-rays to see what is going on in the upper neck area. Once he determines there has been a misalignment, he can go about correcting this and getting your child back to feeling like himself. It is a gentle adjustment and will cause your child no pain what-so-ever, but rather will help him perform better in sports and life in general. Call Dr. Tsiglieris today to set up an appointment.
