impact-whiplash-finding-help-redwood-city-caNearly 2 million people every year experience whiplash related to car accidents. But it’s important to recognize that not all of these accidents happened in major collisions. More often than not, this type of neck injury occurs at speeds as low as 5 mph. In fact, most car accidents happen at 12 mph. This means that most of those 2 million people who suffer from whiplash every year are involved in low-speed car accidents.

If whiplash can occur at 5 mph, then this type of neck injury can also occur in other activities such as a sports-related injury, a fall, or a physical altercation. German researchers Dr. Kaeser and Dr. Ettlin found that whiplash can lead to a number of different problems including hearing loss, dizziness, speech problems, and throat problems. These researchers also reported that through gentle adjustments to the upper neck vertebrae the effects of whiplash can most likely be reversed.

Healing Whiplash

Strength training, range-of-motion exercises, and physical therapy can help the muscles to regain their ability to adequately support the head and neck. However, if you or anyone you know was recently involved in a car accident or any other sort of accident that you could’ve possibly suffered a whiplash injury, we strongly encourage you to seek out an upper cervical chiropractor. Upper cervical chiropractors are trained to detect any type of misalignment that could be the underlying cause of your pain.

Here at Advanced Spinal Care, we use gentle techniques to readjust the upper two bones in your neck. If there is a misalignment with these two bones, the C1 or C2, it can have an adverse effect on the brainstem and the signals being sent to the body. A readjustment will aid in restoring your brain’s ability to communicate with your body, therefore allowing your body to begin to heal itself naturally.

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, textingNeck injuries are a very commonplace problem that can occur very easily. In fact, you may not even notice it has happened until you begin feeling pain. This may happen hours, days, or sometimes years later if the injury is not promptly cared for. How do injuries happen? Any of the following can be responsible:

While most of these injuries seem quite minor, they can cause major damage the longer they are allowed to go uncared for.

Migraines Related to Neck Injuries

An end result of not caring properly for minor neck injuries is migraines. These are not just really bad headaches but a neurological disorder that is very disabling. They can cause you to miss out on many of life's activities if you have to cope with them. Often medication is taken to help ease the pain, but the truth is it just covers over the symptoms. It is much more important to address the underlying cause of migraines: the injury to your neck.

Caring for Neck Injuries Properly

Upper cervical chiropractors have been specifically trained to find and then correct these tiny neck misalignments. Can you believe it only takes a misalignment of ¼ of a millimeter to wreak havoc on the entire body?

Here at Advanced Spinal Care in Redwood City, California, we use a method that is gentle and specifically tailored to each of our patients. The technique we use does not require us to pop or crack the bones of the spine or neck. Rather, we encourage them to move back into place on their own without force, leading to a longer-lasting adjustment. The body can then begin healing from the damage inflicted on the neck, and the end results of neck injuries, such as migraines, can begin to improve.

self-manipulation, neck pain, neck ache, back pain, back acheThe term self-manipulation refers to when you try to crack or pop the bones of your neck back into place. Have you ever felt like you would feel much better if a certain area of your neck or back would just pop? In order to do that, have you ever tried to pop or crack it yourself or asked a friend to give you a hug from behind to do so? Let’s look at why it is not a good idea and how you can find real, safe relief.

Proof of the Danger of Self-Manipulation

A woman who was used to cracking her own neck suddenly started to feel ill. She had a severe headache, along with neck and shoulder pain, and a general feeling of being unwell. Thankfully, she sought medical attention, and it was discovered, after a battery of tests, she had a blood clot that could have killed her. This was caused by a tear in the vertebral artery and was brought about by self-manipulation. This proves just how serious self-manipulation can be, and we warn you to please not attempt it.

An Alternative to Self-Manipulation

If you feel as if you need to have your back or neck cracked, the best place to start is to visit us here at Advanced Spinal Care in Redwood City, California. This is especially important if you have any of the following symptoms:

We use a method that is both safe and gentle to help our patients realign their spines without popping or cracking them. They often see relief in just a few visits.

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, texting Neck pain is all too common in today’s world. In fact, it affects about 70% of people in America. However, there are some proactive steps you can begin doing today so as to avoid future issues with your neck.

Ergonomics at the Office

Sitting at a desk all day can negatively affect the neck. One way to assist in this area is to use some ergonomic supplies for your office. There are ways to adjust your computer monitor so as to keep the computer screen at eye level. You may also be able to use a system to keep your documents at eye level so as to avoid continuously looking down. It is important for you not to stress your neck too much. This is done by making sure your head is positioned over your neck, not bent forward. Using an ear piece while talking on the phone is much safer than talking with the phone between the ear and shoulder.

Proper Posture

Posture is important whether you are sitting or standing. It is vital to keep your spine as straight as possible at all times. Do not sit in one position for an extended period of time. In an hour’s time, it is a good idea to get up 3 to 4 times and move about, stretching your neck, back and leg muscles.

Sleeping posture is important also. This means not sleeping on your stomach. Sleeping on your back or on your side with a pillow between your knees is ideal. Using the right pillow is important as well. Something that does not prop the head up, but keeps it supported is a good idea.

Upper Cervical Spine Care

Another area to look into to reduce neck pain is seeking the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. Here at Advanced Spinal Care in Redwood City, California, we use a gentle method to give our patients adjustments only when absolutely needed. This helps keep the atlas or the C1 vertebra healthy and often eliminates neck pain.

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, texting Neck pain is very common and it is about half as common as back pain. When people have neck pain, it can make it hard for them to have mobility in the neck area, making driving a car or even washing their hair quite a chore.

Most family doctors will care for neck pain by using anti-inflammatories. This does not always work and comes along with unwanted and dangerous side effects, especially if taken on a regular basis. This is making people look for alternative ways to care for neck pain. General chiropractic has worked for some but not always on a long-term basis. So, what does upper cervical chiropractic care offer that differs from general chiropractic?

Upper Cervical Care vs. General Chiropractic

The main difference between the two types of chiropractic comes down to the way a patient is adjusted. While general chiropractors often resort to popping or cracking the spine to move the bones into place, upper cervical chiropractic uses a gentle, precise method that takes measurements and images to help find the exact location of the misalignment. Allowing the bones to move back into place more naturally results in a longer-lasting adjustment. Over time, this leads to lower financial costs for the patient and fewer adjustments.

Neck Pain Alleviated by Upper Cervical Care

Looking back at a number of neck pain patients who received upper cervical care reveals an interesting trend. The study reported that the average pain score of patients before getting an adjustment was 5.89 out of 11. After an adjustment, the pain decreased to 1.76. As far as disability with neck pain goes, the average score had been 35.1 out of 100 and went down to 14.3.

Here at Advanced Spinal Care in Redwood City, California, we aim to get similar results for our patients. A few gentle adjustments may be all that is needed to help a person feel better long-term.

Whiplash, Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Back Pain, Back Ache, Headache, Headaches, Migraine, Migraines, accident, car accident, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Sports AccidentWhiplash is the over-extending or straining of the neck muscles due to some sort of impact. Often it is related to car accidents, but it can also occur during a sports game, bungee jumping, shaken baby syndrome, and incidents where a direct blow to the head occurs. Whiplash associated disorders are a group of conditions brought about by whiplash. They are also known as coup contrecoup injuries.

These types of injuries have a negative effect on the cerebrum, the largest part of the brain that resides just below the skull. The cerebrum is the uppermost region of the central nervous system. It consists of the following:

How Whiplash Causes Coup Contrecoup Injuries

What exactly is a coup contrecoup injury? Breaking it down, it is actually referring to two different injuries that often occur at the same time. The coup injury has to do with where the head was hit with an object. Usually, the moving object impacts the head. The contrecoup injury has to do with the opposite side of where the head was hit, similar to ricocheting. Usually, the moving head hits an object.

Where to Get Help for Whiplash

If a person has been diagnosed with whiplash, a good place to look for help is to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. When whiplash happens, the neck often becomes misaligned. By realigning the bones of the upper neck vertebrae, the tissue and muscles can begin to heal, and the effects of whiplash can be done away with. If left untreated, it may lead to fibromyalgia, migraines, and a number of other conditions.

Dr. Pete Tsiglieris of Advanced Spinal Care in Redwood City, California is an Upper Cervical Specialist trained by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA). His upper cervical clinic also serves San Mateo, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, San Carlos, and Sunnyvale. They are uniquely trained to correct problems in the upper cervical spine (upper neck). This vital area is intimately connected to the central nervous system and problems in this area have been shown to be an underlying cause of a variety of different health problems, including migraines and other headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, neck pain, back pain and shoulder pain and weakness. Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Headache, Headaches, Migraine, Migraines, Neck Injury, Neck TraumaNeck pain is often related to a part of the body that we spend little time thinking about—our nerves. They play a vital role in health and send messages to and from every part of the body. The brainstem, located where the skull meets the neck, is a key part of this internal information highway in the body. Disruptions of this delicate system can cause various neurological issues, problems with the ears, and pain.

Neck Pain Research

One person who has really pioneered the connection between neck problems and overall health is Dr. Michael Burcon. His findings include the fact that subluxations of the upper spine caused by whiplash or other injuries can actually result in things like lesions on the Eustachian tubes that lead to chronic ear issues and vertigo.

Sometimes these injuries take years to surface. Even the initial pain of the injury may be long gone when other symptoms arise. Sometimes there was no neck pain to begin with, but then neck problems begin 15 or more years later.

Help for that Old Pain

Just because the damage occurred years ago doesn’t mean it is too late to try and find relief. Some people may experience neck pain and not even acknowledge something like a car accident from 15 years ago in their patient history. I want to encourage you to include everything in your patient history and let your health care provider determine what is relevant.

For example, at Advanced Spinal Care, we take a history of head or neck trauma seriously, even if the injury was a long time ago and maybe not even that severe. That pain you feel today may still be related, and diagnostic imaging can often reveal if an injury is old or recent. Either way, a specific adjustment to your upper neck ay be exactly what you need to resolve that neck pain.

Whiplash, Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Back Pain, Back Ache, Headache, Headaches, Migraine, Migraines, accident, car accident, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Sports AccidentWhiplash is an injury associated with trauma to the neck or head, injury in a vehicle accident, a fall, or sports-related accident. What can help you make a speedy recovery? Ice is a great way to reduce the swelling or inflammation that commonly occurs with such an injury. It helps the area feel better too. There are other ways to help ensure a full recovery from whiplash and some of the effects that may develop as a result.

Injuries such as the ones mentioned above can cause the upper cervical vertebrae to come out of alignment. To evaluate and treat this, an upper cervical chiropractor can be of invaluable assistance. Why is this type of correction important?

The misaligned vertebrae in the uppermost region of the neck can cause a host of issues over time. For example, even a vertebra that is a quarter of a millimeter off can lead to symptoms. Vertigo is a good example of what could result from this type of injury and misalignment. The normal function of the different systems that convene here—like the vestibular system that controls balance—can be impeded and cause something like vertigo to manifest. An estimated 50% of those suffering from whiplash experience vertigo.

Upper Cervical Care for Whiplash and Vertigo

The good news is that with upper cervical chiropractic care, whiplash and the symptoms associated with it can be corrected, even eliminated. It is advised that this type of care be sought out as soon as possible for optimal results. Evaluations for misalignments include taking measurements to ensure accurate realignment. Very gentle adjusting is then performed by the upper cervical chiropractor. With the vertebrae in proper place, the systems housed in that area are free to perform their duties unhindered.

Caring for a whiplash injury is important. Ice the area to help relieve immediate swelling and pain, then remember to have your spinal health evaluated to prevent further injury or long time effects.

Whiplash, Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Back Pain, Back Ache, Headache, Headaches, Migraine, Migraines, accident, car accident, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Sports AccidentWhiplash has been connected to a variety of disorders. This group includes fibromyalgia, non-traumatic chronic cervical syndrome, and endogenous depression. One recently published study found that 85% of those who suffer from one of the aforementioned disorders presented with sensitivity in the upper back part of the neck. This muscle is known as the capitis muscle. Those who also had a history of whiplash were more sensitive to pain in that same region.

Facts About Whiplash

Pain resulting from whiplash is due to injuries sustained by joints, ligaments, muscles, nerve roots, and disks.

Common symptoms associated with whiplash include headaches, pain that radiates down the arm(s)—also known as brachialgia—dizziness, vertigo, visual disturbances, difficulty chewing or swallowing, and more. Brachialgia, mentioned above, may be due to myofascial tension. Trauma can cause mechanical failure within the muscles which would normally allow them to relax. Muscle contractions can then occur. Each individual is different and symptoms experienced can vary from one person to another. Over time, new issues may also develop.

Spinal Health and Whiplash

Upper neck sensitivities, whiplash related disorders, and the symptoms related to whiplash injury make the case for caring for the spine. In particular, an upper cervical chiropractic can evaluate the uppermost vertebrae in the neck to ensure proper alignment. Whiplash injuries can often slide these vertebrae out of alignment.

When the incident happens, overextension of ligaments in the neck can pull structures from their designated location. Specific measurements and gentle adjustments can reposition a vertebra that is out of place. Realigning these structures relieves pressure put on the brainstem, nerves and other vessels necessary for normal function throughout the rest of the body.

If you have experienced a head or neck injury that has caused whiplash, come and see us at Advanced Spinal Care. An examination will reveal if the damage caused a misalignment that needs to be corrected.

Whiplash injuries should not be ignored due to the fact that they can eventually result in chronic physical damage and even psychological pain. You can’t just “sleep off” a whiplash injury, or “tough it out.” Complications grow worse when a whiplash injury is not cared for properly. Ultimately, physical pain concerts into psychological worry or anxiety due to the effects of the pain.

Consider some of the consequences that long-term whiplash injuries can cause:

The NUCCA Technique for Natural Whiplash Care

The entire quality of one’s life can be reduced substantially by one whiplash-type injury. It can affect the body’s ability to heal, a person’s posture, and even normal head movements can be painful. Rather than ignoring the pain or taking medication and hoping it goes away on its own, seeking the assistance of an upper cervical chiropractor allows you to be proactive in the healing process.

At Advanced Spinal Care, we use the NUCCA method of upper cervical chiropractic. This begins with an evaluation of the position of a person’s atlas and axis (the C1 and C2 vertebrae). This evaluation includes a patient history, a physical examination, and three-dimensional x-rays of the neck and head. If the whiplash injury caused a misalignment, this will be revealed and a treatment plan customized to your needs will be developed.

Once the misalignment is corrected, real healing can begin. The spine will no longer continue to suffer the degenerative effects of an upper cervical misalignment. Plus, many other symptoms that can be caused by such a misalignment will be eliminated. You may be surprised by just how many nagging symptoms were actually the result of a slight misalignment of the upper spine.
