NUCCA VS REGULAR CHIROPRACTICNUCCA vs. Regular Chiropractic Manipulation

So a common question that people ask is what is the difference between NUCCA and general chiropractic manipulation?

The NUCCA Correction is very precise and very gentle without any of the popping, cracking, or twisting of the spine involved with general chiropractic manipulation.  NUCCA spinal care is focused on providing a patient with fast relief, maximum recovery and long lasting results.

The NUCCA Doctor will take extremely precise x-rays of the head and neck to determine the severity and type of the spinal misalignment.  The Doctor will then analyze the x-rays and determine a specific upper cervical correction formula that will work to bring your spine back into alignment.  After the first upper cervical correction the Doctor will take two post x-rays to determine the response of the body to the initial correction.  After the initial evaluation the doctor will be able to estimate the number of corrections needed and the length of time necessary for the spine to be stabilized.

gpsWouldn’t You Rather Have a GPS?

Here’s an example, if you asked me for directions to my house and I said go down to the corner turn right then go a little while and turn left and then go some more and it should be down there somewhere on the right!  What are the chances that you are going to make it to my house?  Not very good…what if instead I said go out and get in my car…I have a GPS already set to direct you from my office to my house…now what are the chances of getting to my house?  Much higher!!! That is just like specific NUCCA care vs. general chiropractic manipulation…the precision and specificity with which we work allows us to get more predictable results in the correction of the spine.  It is spinal engineering…physics, mathematics and biomechanics applied to the spine.

MRI Research Links Neck Problems to Migraine Headaches

Dr. Raymond Damadian, the inventor of the MRI has been doing some amazing research with upright MRIs. He's been able to show that when someone has a misalignment in the upper neck it is actually changing the flow of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) to, from and through the brain. CSF is the fluid that lubricates the brain and spinal cord.

The obstruction comes as the first few bones in your neck become misaligned and causes a backup of CSF and increased pressure inside the head. This brain pressure can lead to a variety of different problems, including migraine headaches.

When this misalignment was corrected by a specialized upper cervical procedure, the studies show that the pressure inside the head decreases significantly and the CSF flow becomes normal , and migraines and other conditions, have significantly improved.

Migraines Eliminated

For example, one of the studies reports on two patients who presented with severe, long-standing migraine headaches and other complications following whiplash injuries. Both patients were examined in an upright MRI utilizing specialized software, which allowed for evaluation of CSF flow.

It was found that in each patient there was a misalignment of the 1st cervical vertebra (Atlas), as well as substantially reduced CSF flow between the skull and the neck. Both patients received an upper cervical correction directed at the C1 misalignment.

Within an hour of the correction both patients were rescanned and normal CSF flow was restored. Additionally, the headache pain was nearly eliminated immediately after the correction in both patients.

The researchers stated:

Prior research has demonstrated a correlation between CSF flow obstruction and intracranial pressure headaches. This is a potentially significant clinical finding (CSF obstruction) that can lead to long-term and often unexplained complaints of unresolved headaches, neck pain, tingling, numbness, and a variety of other symptoms.

This type of upper neck correction can only be performed by a specially trained group of doctors. Fortunately for you, one of these doctors is within your own community.

Severe migraines and neck painSevere Migraines and Neck Pain

Neck pain can be an early sign of a migraine or may show up after the episode, leaving sufferer's with a throbbing pain at the back of the neck. According to an online survey generated by the National Headache Foundation, 38% of migraine patients said they always experience neck pain and 31% said they frequently had neck pain along with their migraine headaches.

It is very common for a tightness in the shoulders and neck to cause a cervicogenic headache (or migraine), which is a condition connected to the cervical spine. This occurs because tightness in the neck muscles and joints stimulates nerves in the neck that extend into the head, resulting in the pain traveling to the head, causing a headache. When it comes to the neck and migraine, the same process takes place except that when the signals reach the head it causes a migraine for those who are prone to getting them.

Muscle tightness and neck pain are usually signs of mental or physical stress and posture, all that can be effectively addressed naturally without drugs. Instead of simply opting for medication to treat migraine neck pain, take a look at your overall health and see if any changes need to be made, including finding time to relax, exercise and to learn stress relieving techniques.

Migraine Medication Management

Medication management of migraine and neck pain generally starts with analgesics like aspirin, acetaminophen and NSAIDs, however the results vary from patient to patient. Sometimes a combination of medications is prescribed, however, this approach has the potential for causing rebound migraine. If this approach fails, a cautious use of an opioid can be prescribed, using a sustained release medication around the clock for unrelenting headaches in the hopes of preventing a rebound effect. Invasive practices may also be considered and they include trigger point injections, facet joint blocks, occipital nerve blocks, nerve root blocks, segmental nerve root blocks, etc. it is important to be aware that all of these pharmaceutical approaches have side effects, and do not address the underlying cause of the migraines only attempt to relieve symptoms temporarily.

Natural Migraine Alternative

Symptoms of cervical spine dysfunction usually include tension and migraine headache (cervicogenic headache). Upper cervical chiropractic care is focused on finding and correcting any alignment issue in your neck that can cause not only migraine neck pain, but a number of other chronic health problems and conditions. Because the human response to trauma and injury is to realign the body, down to even the pelvis and hip area, tension is placed on the spine as well as the cranial nerves, nervous system and also affects blood flow. Gentle and safe upper cervical corrections can relieve and even eliminate neck pain, getting the neck and spine back into the correct positions, without jerking or twisting your neck during the procedure.

Correcting underlying neck injuries will frequently decrease or eliminate migraine headache pain. The best and safest approach available to address severe migraine and neck pain is upper cervical chiropractic and positive lifestyle changes that include following a healthy diet plan, getting a proper amount of sleep, exercise and finding a way to reduce tension.

12 health benefits of seeing a NUCCA DoctorWhat Are the Health Benefits of Seeing a NUCCA Doctor Regularly?

Many people have never seen a chiropractor and may be completely unaware of the incredible health benefits of regularly seeing a NUCCA chiropractor. When you visit an upper cervical chiropractor because you are having a specific problem or you just want to improve your overall health and well-being, you are already taking a more positive approach to your health than a majority of Americans.

Here are 12 health benefits that regular chiropractic patients receive.

Fewer Colds and Flus

Research indicates that Chiropractic patients have incredibly strong immune systems. Dr. Ronald Pero, chief of cancer prevention research at New York's Preventive Medicine Institute measured 107 individuals who had received long-term Chiropractic care. The chiropractic patients were shown to have a 200% greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care.

Sleep Better

With 40 million Americans experiencing a chronic sleeping disorder and 62% of American adults experiencing problems sleeping a few nights a week, Americans desperately need to sleep better.

Chiropractic has been shown to improve sleep, both in children and adults.

Less Pain

When the spine is misaligned due to accidents and injuries, pain frequently develops. Research tells us that Chiropractic adjustments are effective for helping people with pain.

More Energy

In my experience, when someone is under chiropractic care for a while they begin to notice some of the positive side benefits of chiropractic, including more energy and less fatigue.

If you do a Google search to see all the chiropractic patients who have provided testimonials indicating that they have more energy now you will be overwhelmed.

Spend Less Money

Chiropractic care has also been shown to be more cost-effective than the medical approach of drugs or surgery. For example, The Manga Report, a 1993 Canadian government study was quoted as saying:

“There would be highly significant cost savings if more management of low-back pain was transferred from physicians to chiropractors… Users of chiropractic care have substantially lower health care costs, especially inpatient costs, than those who use medical care only.”

Avoid Drugs

Each year, about 4.5 million Americans visit their doctor’s office or the emergency room because of adverse prescription drug side effects. Chiropractic care is a drugless approach to health that has been shown to reduce pharmaceutical costs by 51.8%.

Have Healthier Kids

In a study of 200 kids under chiropractic care versus 200 kids under traditional medical care, the chiropractic kids had fewer ear infections, asthma and allergies.

Improve Moods

Research has demonstrated those suffering with anxiety and depression frequently have dramatic results with chiropractic care. This is because chiropractic has been shown to improve hormone balance. Decreasing the bad hormones like cortisol and increasing the good hormones, such as dopamine and norepinephrine makes a big difference in how the brain and body works and how a person feels.

Avoid Hospitals

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported that chiropractic patients under care results in a 43 percent fewer hospital admissions, then those under medical care.

Have a Natural Resource

Doctors of chiropractic are an excellent resource for your health. They are well-trained, naturally minded professionals who undergo a rigorous education in the healing sciences, similar to that of medical doctors. In some areas, such as anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation, nutrition and public health, they receive more education than a medical doctor.

Be more Satisfied

In addition, chiropractic patients report a greater level of satisfaction with chiropractic care, compared to the medical approach to pain syndromes.

Have an Important Part of Your Health Care Team

Doctors of chiropractic work in tandem with other healthcare professionals. If your condition requires attention from another branch of the healthcare profession, that recommendation or referral will be made.

If you have never been to a NUCCA chiropractor before, now is a great time to get started. To find a Doctor in your area go to www.NUCCA.org or if you are in the Redwood City, California area just click the button below:

Neck surgery risksNeck Surgery Risks

Neck surgery is usually considered if the patient has experienced an injury or has other serious health issues that can include narrow blood vessels, thyroid problems or severe osteoarthritis. Neck surgery is a concern when it comes to treating neck pain because there are many fragile structures in the neck that, when damaged, can lead to severe complications. While choosing a highly skilled surgeon is important, the chance of ending up with serious complications is always a risk with neck surgery.

Dysfunctional Problems

One of the most significant risks facing patients who have neck surgery is the risk of dysfunction's that can include sexual problems (loss of sex drive, etc.) and bladder and bowel problems that cause you to need to go more frequently than you did prior to surgery, or may lead to a loss of control all together.

Medical Complications

Medical complications of neck surgery involving the spinal cord include stroke, blood clots, a heart attack, or in some cases even death during surgery.

Abnormal Bleeding

Excessive bleeding is a risk during neck surgery and in some cases patients also experience abnormal bleeding after they're released from the hospital in which case they need medical care right away. In some cases the doctor will do a transfusion to decrease the chances of a more serious medical problem occurring, including death.

Infection

There is a potential danger of getting an infection at the site of the surgery, occurring when bacteria sets in and the body is unable fight it. The dangers brought on by infection will worsen if it's left untreated. A good sign that an infection has set in is when the body feels weak or you have trouble talking or walking.

Nerve Damage

Nerve damage is a problem that's also associated with neck surgery and there's no way for the surgeon to determine which patients are at greater risk of nerve damage. Nerve damage can cause more pain and in some cases a tingling or numb feeling in the treated area. If nerve damage occurs, the surgeon will need to perform a second surgery in an attempt to fix the problem.

Paralysis

Cervical spinal fusion surgeries have the highest risk of causing spinal nerve damage (because of its proximity to the spinal cord) which can lead to pain, loss of sensation, weakness, loss of feeling and complete paralysis of the legs and arms. This is a risk because the surgeon is in proximity to the spinal cord, which increases the chances of injury to the spinal cord.

A Natural Alternative to Neck Surgery

Although there may be situations where neck surgery is required, surgery should always be a last resort. Upper cervical chiropractic is a sophisticated procedure that specializes in spinal correction and the procedure has been quite successful at alleviating neck pain and restoring health naturally without the need for neck or back surgery.

The upper cervical chiropractic approach requires no popping, cracking or twisting of the spine is a very gentle and precise technique that very few chiropractors in the world have mastered. If you're dealing with cervical (neck) pain, consider consulting with an experienced chiropractor about upper cervical care; it's a viable option for relieving neck pain.

Common causes of migraines and nauseaMigraines and Nausea

Besides just excruciating pain, migraines can be associated with various other symptoms. One common migraine symptom is nausea. The nausea may even become so great that vomiting results. What are the causes of migraines and why is nausea a symptom? An even more important question is: what can you do about your migraines?

The causes of migraines are not completely understood but researchers believe that some migraines may be hereditary while others may be the result of injury. Some have come to find that taking part in certain activities or eating particular foods such as chocolate or red wine is what brings on a migraine. The pain of the migraine may be the cause of the nausea, or it could be related to the chemicals in the brain that are released during a migraine.

What are the common treatments? Many doctors will prescribe an antidepressant, beta blocker, or even an anti-seizure medication to help mitigate symptoms or reduce the occurrence of migraines. Each of these types of medications have side effects. But what can you do if you prefer a natural remedy?

Keeping a journal to discover what triggers your migraines is one good way to try and prevent them from occuring, but to really treat the problem, you have to get to the source. An upper cervical chiropractic visit may help you to discover if an upper neck injury could be the cause of your migraines. If so, a specialized upper cervical chiropractic procedure could reduce the number of migraines you experience, or eliminate them completely.

A healthy backA Healthy Back

Most of us tend to ignore our back, that is, until back pain flares up, resulting in a dull, constant ache and/or a sudden sharp pain. Back pain can be caused by a fracture, sprain, or other accidental injury, can be caused by a medical condition, being sedentary and overweight, or simply be the result of a misalignment of the spine. The good news is that back pain can be prevented. Following are 5 ways to improve the health of your back.

Healthy Weight

Put in the effort to maintain a healthy weight, 10 pounds within your ideal weight. Excess weight can creep up on you and when it does most of us aren't aware of how seriously it affects us. Extra pounds, particularly in your midsection, will make back pain worse because it shifts your center of gravity and puts strain on the lower back.

Good Posture

Always pay attention to your posture. Maintaining the right posture plays an important role when it comes to preventing back pain due to the fact that muscle strain and pressure on the discs, back joints and ligaments is aggravated by bad posture. Some posture breakdown is outside of our control and we  will talk more about that later. But you can maintain good posture when sleeping by attempting to keep your head centered over your neck as much as possible. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, always sleep on your side or back. When sleeping on your side it is important to have a pillow that is supportive enough to keep your head in alignment with your spine. When sleeping on your back it is good to have a pillow underneath your knees in order to take pressure off your lower back.

Support Your Spine

Always support your lower back while sitting by using a pillow that's specifically designed for the purpose or using a rolled up towel or small pillow. This will help to maintain the normal curvature in your lower back. Remove the support every half an hour for a few minutes to change the position of your lower back. It's also a good idea to invest in a good mattress since most of us spend a lot of time in bed. Take the time to do some research, ask friends and family for recommendations, read reviews and test the mattress you’re considering at the store. It's important to keep in mind that what works for one person might not work for you, so be sure take the time to find the best choice for you.

Warm up

Take the time to warm up before exercising or other activities. Jumping right into any activity with cold joints and muscles will definitely increase your risk for injury. There are a number of ways to warm up including Yoga and Pilate moves; you should consider taking a class to learn a variety of moves or look them up online.

Spinal Alignment

Lower back pain is frequently related to changes in posture. Many postural changes are outside of your control. After all, nerves tell muscles how to pull on the spine. If the nerves are sending the wrong message, your posture will continue to be distorted. Postural adaptations such as your head tilting to one side, shoulders being uneven, hips being uneven are all signs of an underlying problem leading to these types of postural changes.

The spine is an extraordinary arrangement of bones, tendons, ligaments, discs, nerves and muscles designed to be strong, flexible and protective. Most of us take what the spine does for granted; that is until something goes terribly wrong. When the spine is aligned correctly, it's incredibly stable and strong. When a misalignment takes place at the top of the neck, the spine adapts or compensates for it in an attempt to protect the nervous system, triggering a chain reaction from the top of the spine to the bottom. Upper cervical chiropractors have been helping people who suffer from lower back pain for years by addressing the underlying cause of these postural changes. These patients usually end up experiencing a phenomenal improvement in both the frequency and severity of their low back pain thanks to upper cervical care. Plus, upper cervical chiropractors are able to address these underlying postural changes without any of the popping, cracking or twisting of the spine common with general chiropractic manipulation.

Healthy neckHealthy Neck

For an ailment that’s as common as neck pain (affecting around 70% of Americans), there are several ways to improve the health of your neck naturally including the following 5 recommendations.

1. Good Posture

We've all heard this one and it involves avoiding slouching whether you're walking or sitting in a chair. Also, avoid sitting for long periods of time without changing positions or getting up. Get in the habit of taking short breaks 3 or 4 times an hour to stretch your neck (leg and back) muscles. Even when you're sleeping you should consider good posture (don't sleep on your stomach) and sleep with your neck straight. You can purchase special neck support (cervical) pillows that can help relieve neck stress.

2. Neck Friendly Office Ergonomics

If you work At a computer there are several ways you can make your office environment more ergonomically friendly. Good examples include adjusting your monitor so that the top of the screen is at eye level and using a document holder when you type that puts your work at the same level as your monitor screen. In addition, sit your head back, positioned over your spine, to minimize neck strain and use a headset if you're on the phone a lot to avoid tucking the phone between your ear and shoulder, a common cause of neck pain.

3. Light Stretching

If you suffer from intermittent neck pain and stiffness, you'll benefit from strengthening and stretching the dozens of ligaments and skeletal muscles that line your neck. The most important thing you can do for healthy muscles and ligaments is to encourage steady blood flow to these tissues, and gently stretching the ones that line your neck is the most effective way to maintain a rich supply of blood in these areas. Try simple exercises like shrugging your shoulders up and down and pulling your shoulder blades together, then relax. Another move would be to pull your shoulders down while you lean your head to each side; this is a great way to stretch tight neck muscles. It is important to always move slowly and take deep breaths in and out when stretching.

4. Find Ways to Relieve Stress

Stress often plays a role in neck pain and also leads to weight gain in many cases. If stress is a factor for you, learn some relaxation exercises, consider meditation and massages, strategies that can not only keep your neck healthy by relieving stress, but also help you avoid stress eating.

5. Upper Cervical Chiropractic

The cervical spine, or neck, is the most delicate section of the spine; it supports the head, houses the spinal cord and regulates blood flow to the brain, all factors that can lead to neck pain due to muscle strain. Upper Cervical Chiropractic, a natural, nonsurgical treatment, can alleviate the pain caused by several types of neck problems and help prevent it by keeping the area in perfect alignment. Basically, upper cervical chiropractic care facilitates correct posture, helping the entire body rebalance itself, which results in less stress to not just the neck but all areas of your body including the rest of your spine. And upper cervical chiropractic does not require any popping, cracking or twisting of the spine. It is a precise mathematical approach to realign the spine to a normal balanced position gently and effectively.

Silent migraineSilent Migraine

The main symptom of a migraine is head pain, right? Not always! A silent migraine is a type of migraine that has many other migraine symptoms without the head pain. With silent migraines, dizziness may be the primary symptom. For other silent migraines, vertigo may be accompanied by nausea, fatigue, chills, confusion, irritability, and other symptoms. Aura will often precede a silent migraine, though it is an uncommon symptom of regular migraine headaches.

With a silent migraine, aura is generally caused by brain activity quickly speeding up and then, just as quickly, slowing way down. Since the condition spreads from the visual part of the brain to other parts, visual symptoms generally begin first. This results in the flashing lights, hallucinations, and partial temporary blindness that can accompany aura that precedes a silent migraine.

Treatment of silent migraines often requires a daily diary to keep track of symptoms and to identify triggers. Triggers could include anything from physical and emotional stress to caffeine, and environmental conditions (extreme temperatures or loud noises) to not getting enough sleep. Your doctor may prescribe any of more than 100 medications that doctors use for migraine headaches. Much of this is trial and error.

While avoiding triggers may limit silent migraines, it doesn't treat the root problem which may be something as simple as an upper neck injury. That is why you should get a consult from an upper cervical chiropractic practitioner. Specialized upper cervical procedures that only a few thousand chiropractors worldwide have mastered may help provide relief on a more permanent basis.

NUCCANUCCA Chiropractic

Many people are confused about chiropractors in general.  Maybe you are unsure about why you would see a NUCCA (upper cervical) chiropractor and what exactly an upper cervical chiropractor does.

Today were going to look at 5 of the most common misconceptions people have about upper cervical chiropractors.

Is NUCCA Chiropractic Safe?

Some people may be under the impression that chiropractic adjustments are dangerous. But the truth is general chiropractic is extremely safe. In fact, if you compare chiropractic care to medical treatment, drug intervention has many more side effects. If you just watch television for a while you’ll hear about all the side effects that are associated with medications that are advertised on TV.

Especially when you evaluate the upper cervical chiropractic approach that we take, which is extremely gentle with no crunching, popping or twisting of the spine common with other spinal approaches. This gentle and precise approach is able to effectively address postural issues and spinal misalignments while creating long-term spinal stability.

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following upper cervical chiropractic typically fades within 24 hours.

Is NUCCA Chiropractic Just for Bad Backs?

When most people think about chiropractic, they think of someone that is having back pain. But chiropractors have successfully helped people with all sorts of conditions , including sciatica, headaches, neck problems, arm and leg numbness and tingling, and more. There are also many people who just see a chiropractor to prevent problems and stay healthy.

Are NUCCA Chiropractors Well Educated?

Another common misconception is that chiropractors do not have a good educational background. This just isn’t true. After completing undergraduate work, chiropractors go on to receive a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Between undergraduate and doctoral work, a chiropractor graduating from chiropractic school will have had over 8 years of education beyond high school. The Doctor of chiropractic curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience.

Upper cervical chiropractors go beyond just their general chiropractic education and spend hundreds of postgraduate hours learning there specific technique.

Is It True That Once You See a Chiropractor You Always Have To?

I’ve heard this one many times over the years. But the truth is there is nothing about seeing a upper cervical chiropractor that will force you to keep seeing one. People continue to see chiropractors for their health because they want to, not because they have to.

When you choose to see an upper cervical chiropractor it is generally because you’re having some sort of a health problem. Those that continue to see chiropractors usually have seen significant results. The problem that they came to the office for has improved or is gone or they have seen all the other benefits associated with chiropractic, such as better sleep, more energy, stronger immune system etc.

And the goal in our office is to help you hold your adjustment as long as possible. It is not about being adjusted, thousands of times, it is about keeping your spine in alignment for as long as possible so that your body can heal and function optimally.

Is NUCCA Chiropractic Affordable?

When you compare chiropractic to variety of other things that we spend money on such as braces for teeth, plastic surgery, LASIK eye surgery, etc. the cost of having a healthy, strong, and mobile spine is a great value.

Chiropractic care has been consistently shown to be cost effective.
