Often, when we think of arthritis, we would think of it as an “old people disease” that causes swelling and tenderness in the hands and joints. However, arthritis can affect people of all ages and other parts of the body, such as the spine.

Spinal arthritis is the inflammation of the joints in the spine. The neck and the back incur the most damage. Some people refer to it as osteoarthritis, degenerative disc or joint disease, or subluxation degeneration.

The spine can start to wear down because of infection, aging, or certain conditions. However, an often overlooked underlying cause of spinal arthritis is a misaligned bone in the upper cervical spine, specifically the C1 or C2 vertebrae.

In children and teens, spinal arthritis may display as mild pain in the back or neck. Because of this, many choose to dismiss it as mere pain. Unfortunately, if left ignored, it can bring about a big problem over time.

As the body starts to identify a joint issue, its way of managing it is by stabilizing the joint. Calcium is tossed into the region where the problem exists, resulting in the abnormal growth of the bones and arthritis.

How to Slow Down the Progression of Arthritis

Perhaps the best care option for degenerative disc disease is NUCCA chiropractic in Redwood City. Degenerative disc disease is also called arthritis of the spine. It often develops due to an injury or accident. This condition typically affects the muscles, discs, and joints that keep the spine in place. It causes the eventual breakdown of the spine itself. As soon as the decline reaches a critical level, the spine locks in place and causes amplified stress to the discs, joints, and muscles.

Furthermore, as more time passes without care, the worse the degeneration becomes. Thus, it’s hard to  identify the exact timeframe when the impairment occurred. However, there are ways to estimate through examination of the amount of damage to the spine. It is a convenient time to introduce upper cervical chiropractic care, particularly NUCCA chiropractic in Redwood City.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Protects the Spine

It is a specific branch of chiropractic care. Upper cervical chiropractors help patients who recently discovered they have degenerative disc disease. Sometimes the patient can remember the start of their problems with a very recent car accident or even an injury that they got 15 years ago. The most critical information patients want is whether their condition is treatable through natural means.

How NUCCA chiropractic in Redwood City Can Help

Our goal is to reverse the injury and damage associated with degenerative disc disease experienced by our patients at Advanced Spinal Care. We focus on finding the root cause of your health problems.

Frequently, the underlying problem originates from the uppermost bones in your upper cervical spine. If the C1 and C2 vertebrae shift out of alignment, they will cause the rest of the body to overcompensate. Realigning the bones to their proper positions would allow the rest of the body to correct itself naturally.

Our NUCCA chiropractic in Redwood City uses only a gentle and precise correction to the misalignment. Therefore, patients will experience natural healing and finally put the overstressed tendons, muscles, and discs entirely at ease and functioning normally again. The health issues related to degenerative disc disease will be addressed effectively. Numerous patients experience whole-body benefits concerning health and well-being after receiving our precise and low-force upper cervical spine adjustments.Call our office at (650) 595-0500 or send us a message to begin upper cervical chiropractic care with us.

When asked about arthritis, most people would label it as a joint problem affecting the knees, hands, or hips. However, arthritis can involve the spine too. Also called spondylosis, it is marked by degeneration or breaking down of the discs between the vertebrae in the spine.

Little do people know, arthritis is an effort by the body to steady an unstable joint. It does so by consuming calcium to make up for the instability, combining the bones of the joint. Therefore, if any part of the body gets injured and becomes unstable, arthritis settles in to attempt to fix this problem. This results in swelling and irregular bone development. Injuries due to a car accident or similar trauma often initiate degeneration or weakening of the spine. It can take years before it causes substantial pain.

Can Arthritis of the Spine Be Prevented?

It is important to note that arthritis is a degenerative disorder, meaning it takes many years to progress to the point that the person suffering feels pain. For example, a person who fell out of bed at age 20, may only start to experience arthritis at age 40 or later.

To avoid arthritis of the spine, it is crucial to keep the joints active and healthy so that they do not merge. This can be done by regularly visiting an upper cervical chiropractor. Upper cervical chiropractors are well trained to look for irregularities in your spine. A misalignment in either the C1 or C2 vertebra can cause instability of the spine and the potential for arthritis.

At Advanced Spinal Care, we use a gentle technique to realign the spinal bones of our patients. We do not perform forceful popping or twisting. Upper cervical chiropractic care enables the body’s natural healing powers to repair any damage done by a spinal misalignment once the misalignment is corrected. Schedule an appointment with us to ensure a healthy spine and prevent arthritis from developing.

the-process-of-arthritis-in-the-spine

The first few things that come to mind when thinking about arthritis are often issues with the knees, hips, or hands. Arthritis can affect the spine as well, a condition that is called spondylosis. This happens when there is degeneration of the discs between the vertebrae (degenerative disc disease). This is a pretty common problem for people, making it valuable to know how it develops as well as ways to prevent it.

Something many people may not know is that arthritis is actually the body’s attempt to stabilize an unstable joint. This is accomplished by using calcium to support the instability, causing a fusing of the bones of the joint together. This why the areas of the body that have been traumatized and have become unstable are where the arthritis progresses in an attempt to correct the problem. As a result, inflammation and abnormal bone growth occur. Arthritis can happen to anyone who has any kind of injury caused by a car accident (whiplash) or a similar trauma. This is how degeneration or breaking down of the spine originates, starting first with an injury that produces an imbalance. In many cases the issue can take 20 or more years to develop to the degree that it causes significant pain.

What Can Be Done to Avoid Arthritis to the Spine?

It is important to keep in consideration that arthritis is a degenerative disorder and that it takes many years to progress to the point that the person is suffering from pain. For example, an injury that was sustained as early as age 2 from a fall, but doesn’t result in pain until 40 years later, shows how long it can take for the condition to take hold.

In order to keep arthritis from taking hold, it is necessary to keep the joints moving and healthy to prevent them from fusing. An easy way to do this is by visiting an upper cervical chiropractor periodically or more regularly as needed. Upper cervical chiropractors are specifically trained to identify misalignments in the upper neck. This area of the spine is vital for all-around body function because a misalignment in either the C1 or C2 vertebra can lead to compensations all the way down the spine. This causes instability and the potential for arthritis.

At Advanced Spinal Care, we apply a method that is gentle and effective at realigning the bones of the neck. There is no need to pop or twist because we choose not to force the bones into place but instead allow them to naturally return to their proper position. This not only produces a longer-lasting correction, but it also gives the body more time to engage its natural healing abilities to repair any damage done by a misalignment. Through taking consistent steps like this to keep your spine healthy, arthritis is far less likely to be able to take hold.

Arthritis In the Spine can arthritis affect the spine

Maybe you know someone with arthritis in their hands or even their knees. But arthritis in their spine – now that might be a new one on you!

Arthritis of the spine is known by several names, including osteoarthritis, degenerative joint or disc disease and subluxation degeneration. It is actually quite common - but do you know what it is or what causes it?

This is how it starts – after all – we’re talking about degeneration, which by the very nature of its definition means a process of deteriorating over time. In fact, the first phase of subluxation degeneration can take 20 years to develop!

One of your spinal joints experiences some sort of trauma, such as auto accidents or whiplash injuries. As a result of this entry, your body tries to stabilize the joint by splinting together the bones that make up the joint. It does this by moving calcium into the area of the inflamed joint; the calcium is what actually causes the splint to develop. As the calcium deposits built up, abnormal bone growth results. Subluxation degeneration eventually takes its toll on your body’s health, leading to other conditions.

Preventing Arthritis of the Spine

Maintaining proper joint alignment and movement is essential to prevent subluxation degeneration. It is best to have an upper cervical chiropractic examination as soon as possible after any type of spinal trauma to reduce your risk of doing damage to your spine.

Keep in mind that trauma to the spine may occur during the birth process or during any of the “tumble and fall” years of early childhood and adolescence – right on up through the early adult years. In fact, it can take 40 – 60 years for full spinal degeneration to set in – that’s a long time to go without care for a vertebral subluxation that may have occurred when you fell off the bed at the age of two!

Remember that upper cervical chiropractors are uniquely qualified to detect any type of degenerative change in the spine. The earlier it is detected, the better chance you have for total correction, protection against further damage and a real opportunity to experience what true health is all about!

Upper Cervical Chiropractic can help to improve joint alignment and function and remember, we can also advise you on the best exercise to do to help relieve pain and keep the condition from progressing.

neck arthritisWhiplash Leads to Accelerated Breakdown of the Spine

Accidents and injuries will tear loose the connective tissue (Muscles, ligaments and tendons) that holds the spine in place.  This will create a weakness, which will allow the spine to breakdown and lock into a stressed position.  The longer the spine is misaligned the more wearing down of the spinal joints, discs, muscles, etc will take place.

Frequently in upper cervical chiropractic offices we will see patients who have been involved in car crashes.  Not only recent car crashes...but car accidents that have occurred 5, 10 or 15 years before or even longer.  Based on the extent of degeneration in the spine the original injury to the spine can be dated approximately.  Why is that?  Well if the spinal balance is altered due to misalignment there will be unequal pressure applied to the spine.  Over time this will lead to a breaking down of the bones, ligaments, discs etc. or what is called degenerative disc disease (Bone spurs and disc thinning etc.).

Upper Cervical Chiropractors have been seeing this phenomenon in our offices for years.  But now the research is also showing that Degenerative Disc Disease or what is commonly called Arthritis of the spine is a result of accidents or injuries.

Can Arthritis Be Prevented?

Here is what Dr. Mason Hohl an MD and professor of surgery at UCLA Medical Center says...“Follow-up x-rays taken an average of 7 years after injury in one series of patients without prior x-ray evidence of disc disease indicated that 39% had developed degenerative disc disease at one or more disc levels since injury.”  7 years after the injury the discs and other spinal structures are already breaking down!  There was an expected incidence of 6% degenerative change in the population over this period of time.

Dr. Hohl goes on to say “Thus, it appeared that the injury had started the process of disc degeneration.”

He goes on to say “In another follow-up study of patients with similar injuries but with preexisting degenerative changes in the neck, it was observed that after an average of 7 years 39% had residual symptoms, and x-ray evidence of new degenerative change at another level occurred in 55%.”  So if you already have had an injury that has started the degenerative process and you have another injury it leads to more degeneration in the area.

Why is it so important to get you head and neck alignment evaluated?  How many of us have had a head or neck injury that has misaligned our spines?  Every day that the spine stays misaligned...more degeneration takes place.

So is it possible to prevent arthritis? Absolutely!

A balanced and stable spine will not degenerate at the same rate as a misaligned and unstable spine.
