Headache, Migraine, Head PainHeadache Classification

All headaches are classified as primary or secondary headaches, which means there's a reason and a cause for your headache. They key is finding out which type of those classifications your headaches fall under, and then take steps to alleviate and overcome the cause of your headache.

Now, let's define the differences between the two classifications

Primary Headache

Secondary Headache

About Your Headache

So, which one of these classifications of headaches do you suffer from? Well, primary headaches are most likely either migraines, Tension-type, or cluster. If you get headaches, but they don't feel like one of those three types of headaches, then your headaches are most likely secondary headaches. That means there is an underlying cause for your head pain. It may be something as common as whiplash, or it may be due to a condition, such as Influenza or sinusitis.

Right now, the best this you can do is stop relying on that headache medication, which won't help the underlying cause and may even worsen your head pain or cause it to become more frequent. Instead, pick up the phone and make an appointment with an upper cervical chiropractor. They will examine your upper cervical spine for any misalignments in your neck that may be the underlying cause of your condition or disease that's causing your head pain.

Your brain send signals to your body via the brainstem, when your two upper neck vertebrae are out of alignment by just ¼ of a millimeter, that communication system is hindered. Realigning those two vertebrae, then, restores, allows your brain to communicate with your body unhindered.

Fibromyalgia, Ear Pain, Upper CervicalFibromyalgia Ear Pain Symptoms

If you suffer from fibromyalgia then you know that the list of symptoms is dozens of items long and that many sufferers experience a large number of symptoms. One common symptom of fibromyalgia is ear pain. The pain may occur in or around the ear. Often patients complain of a feeling of fullness in the ear. The ear may also ache or experience ringing. What is the cause of fibromyalgia ear pain and how can it be addressed in a natural way without prescription medication? Read on to learn more about why fibromyalgia sufferers experience ear pain and how natural approaches such as upper cervical chiropractic may prove effective.

While the connection has not been determined for certain, the one thing that is becoming clear is that ear pain experienced by patients with fibromyalgia is not caused by a problem in the ear itself. One study from just last year determined that the problem springs from the central nervous system. But just because the problem is in the nervous system and not the ear doesn’t mean that the pain isn’t real. Unfortunately, many medical practitioners will just prescribe something for the pain rather than looking for the root cause of the problem.

Misalignment of the Upper Neck and Fibromyalgia

A common underlying cause of pain is a misalignment of the upper neck. When the C1 and C2 vertebrae become misaligned the results can be any number of symptoms including ear pain and many of the other symptoms of fibromyalgia. Why is this the case? These two upper neck vertebrae lie at the base of the brain stem. Any misalignment can thus cause neurological problems that may not display as pain in the neck or spine, but as many and varied symptoms. Because of this fact, upper cervical chiropractic is a logical fibromyalgia ear pain approach. It attacks the symptoms at their source instead of just treating the pain.

Studies have connected upper cervical chiropractic to relieve of the symptoms of both fibromyalgia as well as chronic fatigue syndrome. An injury to the upper cervical spine can cause many of the symptoms related to both conditions and the symptoms may take years to surface making diagnosis of the initial injury difficult. By giving upper cervical chiropractic a try as a natural, drug-free fibromyalgia ear pain treatment, you may discover that the ear pain isn’t the only thing about your health that improves dramatically.

Autism, ASD, ChildrenAutism Spectrum Disorder Is on the Rise

We are in the middle of a global Autism Spectrum Disorder epidemic, with a reported 1 out of 150 children being affected which also impacts their families. Numerous theories have been given as to why the world is encountering such an aggressive rise in the amount of children being effected today, including theories that range from birth injuries and vaccinations to environmental issues and genetics. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to pinpoint which of these factors serves as the actual root cause or whether they all play a part in the development of this challenging condition. Fortunately, there is one natural and highly effective treatment that has been proven to provide relief of autism symptoms; Upper Cervical Chiropractic.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic

While the exact cause of Autism Spectrum disorders hasn’t yet been unidentified, we do know that the disorder impacts the brain's ability to process information by affecting how the nerve cells link up and organize which in turn influences all areas of life, from mood and communication to physical behavior. According to studies carried out by Psycho Educational and Guidance services, upper cervical chiropractic care is 20 to 40% more effective than the usual prescribed medications when it comes to reducing the symptoms commonly observed in an extensive range of Autism related behavioral and learning problems.

While upper cervical chiropractic doesn't promise to treat all the symptoms, or the disorder itself, more and more studies are suggesting that it can provide significant changes in regards to some of its symptoms. When you think about it, especially if you’ve ever had upper cervical chiropractic care for other health problems, it just makes sense that it would be an effective approach since Autism Spectrum disorders are also connected to the nervous system. Essentially upper cervical chiropractic aligns the top of the neck which, when it's out of alignment, disrupts the communication of the brain and body, a factor that plays a big part in Autism Spectrum disorder.

Another study that was published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research stated that altered bio mechanics from misalignment of the upper spine leads to an imbalance in sensory feedback into both the cerebellum and cerebrum. Whenever nerve transmissions to the body's major interpreting and integrating areas of the brain is out of balance it leads to altered nerve reaction to environmental shifts. Combine this data with the theory that the only purpose of upper cervical care is to reestablish accurate nerve communication; it's easy to understand how this chiropractic technique can help in a number of instances.

An upper cervical chiropractor’s role isn't to cure or even treat Autism, its main objective is to aid the brain/body communication, helping the body function as it was intended to function. This is achieved by analyzing the vulnerable connection between the first bone, referred to as the Atlas and the brainstem, which is an important part of the neural communicating pathway. If we discover a problem with the upper neck, we specifically and gently put the spine back in place which frees up the nerve communication, thereby improving the body’s natural recuperative power, which in turn can relieve symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

What to Do Next

For those who are seeking natural and drug free solutions for problems such as autism spectrum disorder, upper cervical chiropractic and other natural approaches offer a safe and gentle alternative to surgeries and prescription medications. Why not consult an upper cervical chiropractic specialist to see if your loved one can benefit from upper cervical chiropractic care?

Whiplash, Car Accident, Neck MusclesSo, you were pulling out of a parking space this morning, you stopped at a stop light, or some other scenario. Maybe you had plans to go to the gym later that morning or to just start a load of laundry when you got home. Whatever the scenario, your plans were interrupted when you were sitting in your car and someone hit you from behind.

Now, you are experiencing a pain in your neck, and you keep hoping it will go away. That's whiplash. It will go away, but it won't go away on it's own. You will have to take steps to make it go away. It is important to follow the below steps to overcome this neck strain.

Four Steps to Overcome Whiplash

  1. Ice your neck  - Place an ice pack on your neck for 20-30 minutes at a time once every three to four hours for two to three days. Make sure the pack is  covered with a thin cloth or paper towel to prevent you from getting frost bite.
  2. Moist Heat – This should only be done after you have followed the above icing procedures for two or three days and the initial swelling has gone down. This might be a good time to take a warm bath or hot tub.
  3. Neck Brace or Collar – If you have one, or know someone who does, you can wear this. But only wear a neck brace if your upper cervical specialist recommends it. They can weaken the muscles, so it is important to only wear them after an examination of your upper vertebra.
  4. Upper Cervical – The most important step in going through the healing process after you experience whiplash is to seek out the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. They can correct any misalignments in your upper neck vertebra.

Complications after Whiplash

When you experience whiplash, your neck muscles crack in a whiplike motion, thus causing them to extend beyond their normal range of motion. There is a high probability that when your neck comes to a rest your top two vertebrae, the Atlas and Axis, will be out of alignment. This misalignment can lead to further complications including migraines, vertigo, carpal tunnel, TMJ, multiple sclerosis, and more.

Tourettes, Children, TicsTourette Syndrome and Birth Trauma

Previously in this blog we looked at research that linked upper neck injuries with Tourette's syndrome. Today we take a closer look at 3 children who were all diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome and responded wonderfully to upper cervical chiropractic.

First we look at a 9-year-old boy who began having health problems soon after his birth (a forceps birth). He also fell down the stairs at age 1. He had many infections including ear infections and pneumonia every year for the first several years of his life. He was diagnosed with asthma at age 2 and prescribed inhalers.

By age 7, he was diagnosed with ADHD and Tourette Syndrome. The Tourette's tics occurred head to toe and involved his eyes, neck, voice, rolling of his toes, flinching of his side, and lifting of his arms overhead. In addition, he was diagnosed with insomnia and depression at age 8 and was prescribed 2 different anti-depressant medications. He also experienced neck pain and headaches 3 times per week since age 8.

During this boy's upper cervical exam, a neck injury was found, which possibly stemmed from either his birth or fall down the stairs.

After his first upper cervical adjustment, his mother reported only 2 days later: 1) his attitude and personality were happier, 2) no headaches, 3) no neck pain, 4) no wheezing, 5) tics were cut in half, 6) slept through the night. One month later, no headaches or neck pain occurred over the month; no asthma or wheezing occurred over the month and no asthma medications were used; all motor tics were completely gone and only an occasional verbal tic occurred; sleeping had been consistently improved; personality and behavior had been consistently improved and anti-depressants had been cut in half; attention in school to school work and interaction with other kids in school was also greatly improved.

Six weeks after the first adjustment, all symptoms were absent. All family members remarked that by having his neck injury corrected, the boy had become a completely different, happy, and healthy child.

Upper Neck Injuries

Next we look at a 15-year-old male who was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at age 7. He had no family history of Tourette Syndrome. The tics were constantly present and worsened during times of concentration, such as during reading and writing. In addition, he suffered from chronic neck pain for years. He described himself as having constant daily tightness in his neck and shoulders, especially at the base of his skull.

During this boy's upper cervical exam, a neck injury was found. His mother could not recall any accidents he had suffered as a child that could have caused his neck injury other than typical falls and sports injuries of childhood, although the boy was an avid snowboarder and had taken some falls on his head.

After his first upper cervical adjustment, he reported having a tremendous reduction in tics and neck pain. He couldn't believe how much better his neck felt after so many years of discomfort. Within a month, he was free of tics and neck pain and was able to resume concentrating on school subjects that had previously been too difficult. His mother reported tremendous improvement in his ability to concentrate, complete school work, etc. After being adjusted, he said he completed his math homework easily. In addition, he also reported how much of a relief it was to no longer worry about experiencing tics, especially in front of other people.

Lastly, we examine the case of a 7-year-old boy who began experiencing the tics of Tourette Syndrome at age 5. The tics in his face, neck, arms, and feet occurred infrequently in the beginning and gradually increased to 100's of times per day, his mother reported. He was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at age 7.

During the boy's upper cervical chiropractic evaluation, an upper neck injury was discovered. His mother reported various traumas before her son was 5, including a breech birth, a fall out of the high chair, and skiing falls, that could have contributed to his upper cervical injury. Within 10 days of his first upper cervical adjustment, his parents and teachers noticed a decrease in the tics. In less than 3 months of treatment, all tics were absent.

The purpose of Upper Cervical Spinal Care is to reverse the trauma-induced upper neck injury; thereby reducing irritation to the injured nerves in the central nervous system. While many TS sufferers recall specific traumas such as head injuries, birth trauma, auto accidents or falls, some do not. In certain pediatric cases, the injury can occur from the normal birthing process. An upper cervical examination is necessary in each individual's case to assess whether an upper cervical injury is present and whether benefit from Upper Cervical can be achieved.

Tourettes, Children, TicsNot All Tourette’s Syndrome Is Genetic

Researchers generally consider Tourette's syndrome to be a genetic disorder (TS vulnerability is transmitted from one generation to the next), approximately 15% of TS patients do not show genetic susceptibility (no genetic links were found). In addition, individual variations in character, course, and degree of severity of TS cannot be explained by genetic explanations alone.

Consequently, researchers have focused upon stressful events during perinatal or early life that may trigger the onset of TS. Traumatic head injury (during birth, falls, accidents, etc.) has been implicated as a possible trigger of TS. Evidence supports that trauma (in particular mild concussive injury to the head, neck or upper back) increases the risk of TS onset. Following the trauma, tics can be triggered immediately or can take months or years to develop.

A Possible Traumatic Cause

New research appearing in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health supports a possible traumatic cause. A 14-year-old male with Tourette’s Syndrome had missed school the previous two days prior to presenting to the clinic due to the severity of his motor tics, migraine headaches and severe “fatigue”.

The patient’s symptoms were so severe it was indicated that he was having 1,000 “violent” motor tics a day that consisted of whipping his head involuntarily in flexion and extension, which also contributed to his fatigue.

The patient’s migraine headaches (which occurred daily) were attributed as resulting from these motor tics. The patient was taking 6 Ibuprofen pills, 10 mgs of Abilify® (aripiprazole), and 1mg of Orap® (Pimozide) per day.

Physical examination which included thermal and infrared thermography and radiological examination demonstrated sites of spinal misalignments likely caused by trauma. Over the course of 30 patient visits in a period of 5 months, dramatic reductions were reported in the amount of tics experienced daily. The total number of tics were reduced from 1,000 a day to 30-35 tics per day. The patient’s dependence on Ibuprofuen was eliminated and his medication dosage (i.e., Abilify and Pimozide) was reduced by his medical provider.

This is not the first time that a person with Tourette's syndrome has received dramatic results with this type of care (see references below). For instance, Dr. Erin Elster reports on 3 boys diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome, Age 9, 15 and 7, who all had tremendous results with upper cervical chiropractic.

Next time we will review these 3 cases and talk more about the type of care they received.

The purpose of Upper Cervical is to reverse the traumatically induced upper neck injury; thereby reducing irritation to the injured nerves in the central nervous system. While many TS sufferers recall specific traumas such as head injuries, birth trauma, auto accidents or falls, some do not. In certain pediatric cases, the injury can occur from the normal birthing process. An upper cervical examination is necessary in each individual's case to assess whether an upper cervical injury is present and whether benefit from Upper Cervical care can be achieved.

Colic, Traumatic Birth, Baby, CryingLast time we looked at case study involving an eight week old with colic. Today we look at other research demonstrating the effectiveness of chiropractic care in the health of newborns.

First of all it is important for parents to understand that when adjusting newborns, forces used are very gentle. And there is great evidence suggesting that chiropractic may be effective in treating a wide range of childhood ailments, including colic.

Research supports the expanding acceptance that there exists a vital relationship between the spine and the proper function of visceral organs and systems. Lewit observed the effects of compromised neural integrity, due to blocked nerves at the spine upon vital functions of the body.

Hipperson reported on a case study in which a 7-week old male infant was diagnosed with colic, reflux, and sleep disturbances. It was noted in the case history that this infant had a traumatic birth and went into distress during the final hour. The baby received chiropractic care three times a week for three weeks. After the fourth visit, symptoms of colic significantly decreased and sleeping habits improved. After seven visits, the reflux had resolved.

Klougart et alconducted a prospective multicenter study involving 316 infants with colic. The study found 94% of the participants improved following chiropractic care. The authors concluded that chiropractic care is effective in treating infantile colic. These are two examples of the many studies which have shown the positive effect of chiropractic spinal adjustments for the condition of infantile colic.

Colic, Traumatic Birth, Baby, CryingIn the November 28, 2012 issue of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, Dr. Ron Castellucci documents the case of an eight week old infant suffering from colic after a traumatic birth. And how this baby's parents were able to get to the cause of the problem and get rid of the colic forever.

Infant colic is characterized by episodes of inconsolable crying in a baby for which no apparent reason can be found. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center infantile colic is suspected if the baby exhibits the following:

An 8 week old female patient presented with symptoms of colic which included crying for up to five hours. The crying often started at 10 am and would last well into the night, which persisted for 7 weeks prior to the first adjustment.

The patient was unable to sleep or breastfeed due to the crying. The patient also exhibited signs of pain with bowel movements which is described as high pitched crying and wincing.

Often the patient would awaken during the night crying and in obvious distress or was unable to fall asleep. The patient also had diarrhea which was accompanied with screaming and crying. The patient was prescribed Hyoscyamine (marketed under the trade name Levsin) which is used to control symptoms associated with disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Prior to birth, the patient and her mother were in distress after 18 hours of labor and were transported to the emergency room where the mother was given ptocin to induce labor and an epidural for the pain. Other drugs prescribed in the ER were for nausea and migraine. The patient eventually delivered via cesarean section because the baby failed to turn and engage in the birth canal.

The patient was crying and in obvious distress during her first visit. She was examined and found to have obvious misalignments within the spine. On her initial visit, the patient was crying and in obvious distress. She left the office, after her first adjustment, crying less and with less distress. She was scheduled for a second visit on the following day.

On this visit the patient was sleeping and there were no signs of distress. The parents reported the following:

“after her first visit, she slept the entire night. She did not have the crying spells and we reduced the medication to once per day. After two weeks of chiropractic care the parents reported the following “she (the patient) no longer takes her medication. She is now a happy baby. She eats, sleeps and has regular bowel movements with no pain. For the first time since she was born, she slept through the night.”

Complete resolution of the colic symptoms was seen after 8 visits over 4 weeks. A follow up discussion with the patient’s parents found that the colic symptoms have not returned and the patient has been very healthy.

In the next blog post we will look at other research showing the difference chiropractic makes in the health of babies with colic.

Ear Infection, Babies, Children, Upper Cervical, ChiropracticSome small children and babies have low immune system due to which they are more vulnerable to different forms of infections. Otitis Media (OM) mostly occurs in babies who have been ill due to the flu or cold. Viruses and bacteria find a way into the middle ear leading to ear infections. Sometimes mechanical obstructions caused by the structural misalignment inside the ear such as skull, jawbones and cervical spine lead to blockage. In such cases, fluid builds up near the eustachian tube and eardrum providing a place for the microbes to grow and create an infection in the ear.

Other Reasons for Ear Infection

One of the biggest causes of OM is birth trauma. Babies born with traumatic births or interventions such as vacuum extraction and forceps or by pulling the neck are more at risk of facing cranial or spinal cord injury. Cesarean sections also can put a severe strain on the neck as the baby is pulled from the incision site. In the U.S, alone 35 percent of infants born through C-section suffer from ear infections. Drugs given to the newborn can further aggravate the condition. In 50 percent of the children over 10 months, use of pacifiers or sucking mechanism has been found to be the cause behind such infections. Some research also shows that the overuse of vaccines and medications such as the antibiotics can cause infection in the ear.

How can Upper Cervical Chiropractic Adjustments Help?

To ensure that the ear infections do not occur in the newborn children, doctors suggest chiropractic adjustments. In the upper cervical chiropractic approach, the doctor corrects the interference in the nervous system by adjusting the misalignments of the upper neck. This procedure also has an influence on the jaw, cranial bones and spinal column without using any surgical procedure or drugs.

These corrections also decrease inflammation, muscle tension and increase mobility. Due to this proper flow of blood and drainage of lymph is made possible which is necessary for the smooth functioning of the Eustachian tube and middle ear. According to a study conducted by Dr. Joan Fallon, upper cervical chiropractic mobilizes the process of ear drainage with children and regular draining stops the buildup of fluid which is the main cause of infection. This gives the body time to build antibodies and recover much faster. One study showed that 80 percent of children did not show any further infection after undergoing upper cervical chiropractic adjustments.

Shoulder Pain Shoulder pain, neck problems and upper cervical chiropractic

Shoulder pain is a terrible thing to have to live with. People never realize how much their shoulders play a role in everyday living until it starts to hurt. Shoulder pain can be caused by many things but the most common causes are overuse or doing activities that are not usually done.

Some individuals when suffering from shoulder pain will go to a medical doctor. Frequently the result of that visit will be sending you home with some sort of over-the-counter or prescription pain or anti-inflammatory medication. Often the pills will help with the pain, but they won’t fix the root of the pain.

An underlying cause of shoulder problems can be related to posture and poor body mechanics as a result of misalignments in the spinal column. If the position of the head is altered as a result of accidents or injuries, the shoulders will frequently be tilted. Sometimes you can see this postural change in the mirror where one shoulder is lower than the other. This postural imbalance can lead to overuse or straining of the shoulder with unusual activity.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic

Going to an upper cervical chiropractic clinic is an excellent way to seek the underlying cause of your shoulder problems. An upper cervical chiropractor will look for postural imbalances that may be leading to your shoulder dysfunction. Misalignments in the spine can also lead to nerve irritation and nerve related numbness, tingling and pain in the shoulder and arm.

An upper cervical chiropractor is able to correct these underlying postural imbalances without any of the popping, cracking or twisting of the spine common with general chiropractic manipulation. Because the upper cervical approach is non-traumatic to your spine, it leads to maximum recovery for misaligned joints and structures.

Upper Cervical Chiropractors also have a large knowledge of exercises that can help to strengthen the muscles that will support the alignment and help keep it in place. There are many individuals that have felt instantly better after going to an upper cervical chiropractor.

Shoulders are used every day and when they hurt it certainly will get our attention. Injuries rarely happen at a convenient time, but it is important that we respect pain signals. To see the underlying cause, rather than just covering up the symptoms will lead to less problems down the road.
