Chronic Pain, Migraine, HeadachesIf you are living with the devastating pain of migraines, you're more than likely dealing with the usual debilitating symptoms that include nausea, extreme sensitivity to sound or light, vomiting and intense pain. Some migraine sufferers also experience weird visual disturbances that some describe as what looks like electrical bolts of color (auras), a tingling or numbing feeling, having difficulty speaking and clumsiness, and the attacks typically last between 4 to 72 hours. The standard medical treatments for migraines usually consist of a combination of prescription and over the counter drugs that are usually far from effective and don’t treat the root cause. In addition, most of these drugs come with a long list of potentially dangerous side effects.

What is Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care?

This chiropractic approach focused of the upper cervical spine is a rapidly growing, safe and accurate type of care that centers on the connection between the upper cervical spine (the first two bones in the neck) and the brain stem. An imbalance in the body takes place when the Atlas (C1) and/or the Axis (C2), the top 2 vertebra in the neck, are out of alignment. This misalignment can come about as a result of physical trauma including car accidents, sports injuries, falls, and other head and neck injuries.

Migraines and Upper Cervical Care

A misalignment in the upper cervical spine can affect the functionality of the brain stem which in turn can cause migraine headaches. Doctors who specialize in the brain stem and upper cervical care receive extensive education and training, using the latest, state of the art technologies to analyze the misalignment and correct it. The goal of the upper cervical doctor is to correct spinal misalignments in order to restore normal function to the nervous system or brain stem, consequently addressing what is actually causing the migraines instead of just treating the symptoms. The end result of upper cervical care has actually been so exceptional that the vast majority of migraine sufferers have significantly improved in both the frequency and severity of their migraines.

Chronic Pain, Migraine, HeadachesChronic Migraine Headaches

Chronic migraine headaches are those that occur 15 or more times a month with a headache that lasts 4 hours or more, at least 3 months in a row for individuals with ongoing or a previous diagnosis of migraine. This means that individuals with chronic migraines spend a huge amount of time dealing with debilitating pain, in many cases making them miss work or school and the activities they enjoy. There are approximately 3.2 million Americans that suffer from chronic migraine (mostly women), an astounding number.

While there's no proven cure, there are chronic migraine treatments that can help manage the pain and frequency of the attacks with most falling to into 2 groups; acute and preventive. If you're considering seeing a headache specialist or other health professional with experience treating migraines, you should keep a diary to help with your consultation regarding your pain and treatment options.

Acute and Preventative (prophylactic) Medications

Acute medications are available by prescription or over the counter and taken as needed with the hope of stopping the pain once it has begun. Individuals, who don't respond to acute medications, experience major disruptions in their lives due to migraine, or have a high occurrence of migraine attacks, may want to consider preventive therapy. Unlike treatment options that are used at the beginning of a migraine, preventive medications are taken on a regular basis with the objective being to reduce the severity and frequency of the attacks.

The problem with taking any drugs, over the counter or prescription, is that there are an unsettling number of migraine sufferers with heart problems who should never be prescribed common migraine medications that are given the drugs anyway. All of the drugs are triptans and while they can be effective when it comes to treating migraine headache symptoms, they can also cause major problems for people with heart conditions because they temporarily narrow the blood vessels. This also includes men and women in their 40's and 50's, diabetics, smokers and those with a family history of stroke or heart disease.

Another concern is that frequent use of migraine medication does little to nothing to address the underlying cause of the attacks and can actually cause them to become more frequent. Studies have revealed that taking the drugs incorrectly (including too often) can contribute to the headache burden, leading to withdrawal or what are referred to as “rebound” headaches. This is where a destructive cycle begins, leading to the taking of even more painkillers, followed by more intense migraines. Many also find that the medication gradually loses its effectiveness yet they need to keep taking it if they want to avoid rebound headaches.

A Natural Solution for Migraine Headaches

Upper cervical chiropractic care is a gentle, side effect free way to alleviate migraine headaches. Upper cervical care also improves posture and body balance, helps patients recover from painful whiplash injuries as well as balances the nervous system. Upper cervical chiropractic care is a precise, non-invasive approach which makes it a great natural alternative to chronic migraine problems. Although injections, medications and surgery are often recommended to treat migraine, you may want to consider them as a form of treatment as a last resort.

Headache, Migraine, Head PainHeadache Classification

All headaches are classified as primary or secondary headaches, which means there's a reason and a cause for your headache. They key is finding out which type of those classifications your headaches fall under, and then take steps to alleviate and overcome the cause of your headache.

Now, let's define the differences between the two classifications

Primary Headache

Secondary Headache

About Your Headache

So, which one of these classifications of headaches do you suffer from? Well, primary headaches are most likely either migraines, Tension-type, or cluster. If you get headaches, but they don't feel like one of those three types of headaches, then your headaches are most likely secondary headaches. That means there is an underlying cause for your head pain. It may be something as common as whiplash, or it may be due to a condition, such as Influenza or sinusitis.

Right now, the best this you can do is stop relying on that headache medication, which won't help the underlying cause and may even worsen your head pain or cause it to become more frequent. Instead, pick up the phone and make an appointment with an upper cervical chiropractor. They will examine your upper cervical spine for any misalignments in your neck that may be the underlying cause of your condition or disease that's causing your head pain.

Your brain send signals to your body via the brainstem, when your two upper neck vertebrae are out of alignment by just ¼ of a millimeter, that communication system is hindered. Realigning those two vertebrae, then, restores, allows your brain to communicate with your body unhindered.

Retinal Migraine Silent migraine

Have you been experiencing strange symptoms in one of your eyes?

Seen flashing lights, suffered temporary blindness or seen patterns in your visual field?

Have you been to your medical doctor and received a diagnosis of retinal migraine?

Have you been told that medications are the only answer for your headaches?

Your migraines may be due to blood flow, and the solution may be traced to an accident or injury in your past.  But what exactly is a retinal migraine? Here are five signs that you can use to tell if you have retinal migraine…

  1. One eye: First, the eye symptoms tend to affect only one eye.
  2. Visual disturbances: So what’s going on in this one eye? There are a variety of disturbances which other migraine sufferers may be familiar with. This might include flashing lights, or patterns in your visual field. There may be an area where your vision is impaired (ie dark spots), or even loss. Even temporary blindness in one eye is possible with retinal migraine.
  3. Temporary: Permanent vision loss is another matter. With retinal migraine the symptoms are reversible.
  4. Headache: A headache typically starts during the visual disturbances, or within an hour after they stop. The headache typically lasts between 4 hours to as long as 3 days, is often one-sided and pulsating, and usually either includes sensitivity to light and/or sound, nausea, or both.
  5. Repeated: In order to actually be diagnosed with retinal migraine, you need to have had at least 2 attacks.

Researchers suspect decreased blood flow to the eye or optic nerve may be to blame for the unique symptoms of retinal migraine. This decreased blood flow can be a result of trauma to the upper neck. Accidents and injuries affecting the head and neck can lead to misalignments which can change blood flow from the brain to the body.

A doctor trained in upper cervical care is able to closely examine the anatomy of the upper neck with both physical examination procedures and specific x-ray protocols. By identifying these specific misalignments the upper cervical trained doctor may be able to find the missing link and underlying cause of the retinal migraine.

Whiplash Symptoms May Be Slight at First Whiplash

An injury to the neck caused by a sudden movement of the head, backward, forward, or sideways, is commonly referred to as "whiplash." While the term "whiplash" is most frequently used to describe auto accident injuries (in which a person is rear-ended, hit head-on, or hit from the side), whiplash can also frequently occur during ski accidents, bike accidents, falls, blows to the head, and other head/neck traumas.

THE MYTH: "If I don't have any symptoms right away, I'm O.K.".

THE TRUTH... After many auto and sport-related traumas, symptoms can be so slight at first, an individual may not realize he/she has been injured. Even if a person feels relatively normal after an accident, he/she should be thoroughly examined. Symptoms can be delayed for days, months, or even years.

COMMON SYMPTOMS: The following are symptoms that can occur following a head/neck injury (days to years later):

In many cases, more severe immune-related, neurological, pain, and disease conditions (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Susceptibility to Infection, ADHD, Seizures, Multiple Sclerosis) can result from head/neck injuries, sometimes occurring many years after the accident.

WHIPLASH FACTS

Two million people are exposed to whiplash injury (related to an auto accident) in the U.S. every year.

When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth or side-to-side beyond its normal limits, ligaments supporting the neck vertebrae can be sprained (over-stretched) or torn, forcing vertebrae out of their normal position.

In tests of low speed rear impact collisions, it was reported that the neck can be injured even in slow speeds accidents as low as 5 mph.

Most rear impact accidents occur at crash speeds of 6 to 12 mph - speeds below the threshold for property damage to the vehicle - but sufficient to cause neck injury.

Whiplash injuries to the cervical spine can occur in sports (skiing, hockey, football, cycling, ice skating, gymnastics, boxing), due to falls, and more!

Neck injuries and dizziness

If migraine headaches were a form of entertainment, they'd be a really bad broadway musical. You know the kind you read poor reviews about, cringe during the musical performances, and can't seem to get the songs out of your head. Migraines don't always but sometimes happen in phases. Those phases can start up to 24 hours before the headache begins and last for days after the actual headache.

Migraine Headache Stages

Prodrome Phase – These are symptoms that occur before the headache and only effects 60% of sufferers. This stage can start anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days before the Aura stage. Symptoms may include altered mood, irritability, depression and euphoria, fatigue, stiff muscles, food cravings, constipation or diarrhea, or sensitivity to smells or noise.

Aura Phase – This is a transient neurological phenomenon that happens during or just before a migraine occurs, begins gradually, and usually lasts less than 60 minutes. This only affects a little more than a third of Migraine sufferers. People who have migraines with aura may experience partial blindness, zigzag lines, blurring, a sensation of pins and needles, numbness and tingling, speech difficulty, dizziness, hallucinations, or loss of motor function.

Pain Phase - This is the stage of the actual headache, and it also usually begins gradually. The pain can be moderate to severe, but physical activity can worsen the pain. Those who do not go through the aura stage before or during this stage commonly experience neck pain. This stage lasts anywhere from four to 72 hours.

Postdrome Phase – When a migraines ends, the effects may linger. Symptoms during this stage may include soreness where the headaches occurred, impaired thinking, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, mood changes, and weakness.

After the Migraine

If you suffer from these debilitating headaches, you don't need to live with the pain any longer. An upper cervical specialist can examine your neck to determine if a misalignment in your upper neck vertebra may be the culprit of your Migraines. Upper neck misalignments have been shown to lead to migraine headaches and can only be corrected by an upper cervical specialist trained in specialized procedures.

Through the Brain Stem... brain stem and the upper neck

The Brain stem is an extension of the brain itself that extends down into the upper neck area (upper cervical spine).  The brain stem is susceptible to injury if the Atlas or Axis the top two bones in the spine are twisted or tilted as a result of traumatic accidents or injuries.  Most of these injuries are to the head or neck.  Examples would be car accidents, falls, diving accidents, surfing injuries, snowboarding falls, childhood falls from trees, off bikes, changing tables and more.

The common denominator is an injury that has torn loose the tissue that holds the spine in place in the upper neck which creates a weakness, which will allow the weight of the head (10-14 lbs) to become displaced from it's normal position.  This misalignment of the head and neck relationship can be as little as 3/4 of degree and the brain will have to adapt to this new position.  Our eyes and ears are created to be balanced.  When the head is not balanced properly compensations will develop in order to rebalance the structure of the body and the eyes and ears through the righting reflex in the brain.  Without this compensation we would just fall over when we stood up in a gravity environment.

The longer this compensation exists the more our body must adapt to this structural misalignment. This can lead to conditions like scoliosis or abnormal curvature of the spine.

Eventually we will develop symptoms as a result of nerve dysfunction.

Which symptoms?

That depends on the person and the nerves that are effected.

For instance the brain stem through the Vagus nerves controls the digestive system.  Dysfunction here can lead to conditions like Acid Reflux, constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and colic in kids.

And what about headaches?

Headaches can be caused by both the blood flow and nerve flow changes from the brain to the body and head and face when the brain stem function is altered.

So what can happen when the brain stem pressure is removed through the correction of an upper neck misalignment by a qualified upper cervical specialist?

Amazing things!

Amanda is a patient of ours who at only 21 years of age had had several head and neck traumas beginning in early childhood.  These conditions in Amanda's body where leading to a daily dependence on Tums and Advil to just get through the day.

Thank God that is all over now.

Here is Amanda's story.

“When I first came into this office I was hoping to get rid of my acid reflux, because every night when I laid down I would get it regardless of what I ate.  I also headaches, terrible allergies and generalized pain and aches throughout my body.

Now only 6 weeks into my care I sleep better at night, my sinus passages are clear, my breathing has improved.  No acid reflux!  I haven’t had an episode in weeks.  I no longer need to take the Tums or the Advil that was just normal to me before.

I am happier in general because all of my pain and discomfort is gone!  My work and service to the Lord has improved, I am more willing to take the extra step and go the extra mile.

You may think that there is no cure for the problem that you are dealing with, your normal doctor may think that you are being ridiculous, but NUCCA care is the cure…at 21 years old I have never felt so good!”

Are you ready to feel good again or maybe for the first time?

Many Celebrities and Athletes Struggle with Migraines

Ben Affleck Migraines

Ben Affleck Argo and Migraines

"Ben Affleck Out of Poker Championship due to Migraine" was the headline in the New York Post back in July of 2010.

The star of oscar award winning Argo has struggled with migraines for years frequently showing up in the media.

We see many athletes, artists, and celebrities getting migraine headaches including NFL giants Terrell Davis, Percy Harvin and Troy Aikman, tennis great Serena Williams, basketball superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and baseball stars Jonathon Papelbon and Johnny Damon; actors Ben Affleck and Whoopi Goldberg.

NUCCA doctors frequently see a 90-95 % success rate with Migraine Headaches being eliminated. The other 5-10% at least see a reduction in the frequency and intensity of these headaches. And they are able to address the underlying cause safely and gently.

So why doesn't Ben Affleck get into a NUCCA doctor's office and get rid of those migraines?

Maybe he just doesn't know about NUCCA.

NUCCA Effective at Getting to the Underlying Cause of Headaches

The answer is trauma. Physical trauma...such as car accidents, falls, sports injuries, childhood injuries and more lead to a tearing loose of the tissue that holds the spine in place. Which creates a weakness. Once that happens the spine begins to breakdown. It starts in the most movable and vulnerable area, the top of the spine where the skull and the spine come together at the Atlas vertebrae. This misaligned upper neck area creates pressure on the brain stem and veins that drain the brain. This is why pressure will begin to build up into the head often leading to headaches. The brain stem irritation also explains the nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, etc that frequently goes along with Migraine headaches.

These observations are now being demonstrated in the research as well. A recent case study is showing that after an NUCCA correction, a follow-up Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance (PC MR) Study demonstrated changes in flow from the jugular veins that leave the brain. The subject of the case study obtained relief from migraine headaches by the end of thirty days. The PCMR exam continued to show improvement of the blood flow measured over the 16-week study period as long as the person maintained proper alignment of the upper neck. A larger study is currently being conducted in Canada on Migraines, Atlas misalignments and blood flow changes.

So how about you?

Are you losing parts of your life because of the effects of Migraine Headaches? Or do you have them "under control" with medications. At some point covering up the symptoms will lead to other problems. Or those meds won't work anymore and you will have to get stronger ones.

Isn't it time to find the cause and eliminate it?

If you want to hear from more real people like you who have been helped by NUCCA check out the reviews.

But now you need to take the first step...

What Is Causing Your Chronic Sinus Problems?Up to 90% of Sinus Problems Are Really Misdiagnosed Headache Syndromes

Most people with chronic sinus problems will suffer with regular congestion or infections or both for years.  Improper drainage of the sinuses can lead to chronic colds and flu, allergies, fatigue, pain and more.

So what to do?

Take endless decongestants, antihistamines, and nasal steroids?

That will help you to contribute to the $5.8 billion a year that Americans spend on sinus treatments, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation.

Use a neti pot or other nasal rinse device to try to keep your sinuses clear?

Or you could be one of the 500,000 Americans that have sinus surgery every year!

Some estimates say that up to 90% of sinus problems are really misdiagnosed headache syndromes.

Sinus Problems, Chronic Pain and Fatigue: What’s the Connection?

A study suggests that sinus problems can be associated with unexplained fatigue and bodily pain. Chronic fatigue syndrome is difficult to both diagnose and treat. However, doctors at Georgetown University Medical Center have discovered an unexpected connection with sinus symptoms and chronic pain.

They questioned 297 patients and noted unexplained fatigue in 22 per cent and chronic pain in 11 per cent. Nine percent of patients had both problems.

The same underlying problem may be the root cause of all 3 conditions.  A misalignment in the upper neck can lead to sinus issues, chronic pain and chronic fatigue.

When someone has accidents and injuries that have torn loose the connective tissue that holds the spine in place it will allow the spine to breakdown and lock into a stressed position.  The area of the spine that is most frequently affected is the upper neck area because it is the most movable and the most vulnerable to injury.

Once this upper neck area is misaligned it will begin to affect the function of the brain stem.  This undetected brainstem injury can lead to a variety of problems including dysfunction with the release of cortisol.

Dr. Marshall Dickholtz Sr., a NUCCA doctor from Chicago, along with a medical doctor and a psychiatrist did some very interesting research several years looking at the connection between the upper neck and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  Here's what the found when they compared quality of life measurements using a survey called the SF-36 six months after the initial correction to normal subjects:

In addition both the quality and quantity of sleep improved based on all testing and there was significant decrease in sleep medication usage.  And maybe most remarkable all subjects in the study found a normalization of cortisol levels in the morning and evening readings at 6 months into care!

Colic Crying Newborn BabyColic and Migraines

On April 16, 2013, Several major news sources, including USA Today, Reuters, the Huffington Post, WebMD and CBS news reported on new research coming out of France published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that links having colic as in infant and having migraines as a child or an adult. This is the 4th study to come out recently linking colic to migraines.

The Huffington Post reported:

"In the study, children ages 6 to 18 who visited an emergency room for migraine headaches were about six times more likely to have experienced colic — or frequent, unexplained crying — as an infant compared with children who visited the emergency room for other reasons...The new findings suggest infant colic and migraines may be symptoms of the same underlying condition, said study researcher Dr. Luigi Titomanlio, of the pediatric emergency department at Robert Debré Hospital in Paris."

But what could this underlying condition be?

Same Underlying Condition

When the upper part of the neck is misaligned it will change the flow of cerebral spinal fluid and blood to and from the brain. This change in CSF and blood flow can lead to a variety of neurological problems. Including colic in children and migraine headaches in adults.

When a baby is born frequently the upper neck is injured. This injury can show symptoms such as colic, GERD, ear infections and other childhood illnesses. If the upper neck injury is corrected by an upper cervical procedure then the colic or other symptoms are frequently eliminated.

However, if the upper neck misalignment is not corrected, then migraine headaches or other conditions will frequently develop later in life.

So whether colic is an early form of migraines or not the underlying condition can be addressed safely, gently and effectively by upper cervical chiropractic care.
