We have probably all experienced a muscle knot at one time or another. The pain can range from dull to sharp. We may ache all the time and feel increased pain when moving. The pain can be in a person’s back, neck, or shoulder. But what is a muscle knot and what natural remedies are available? Let’s consider why we experience muscle knots and what can be done for them without taking pain medication.
Sometimes due to use, overuse, or misuse of a muscle, the fibers constrict and cannot release. This gives us the knot like feeling that we get when we touch the area. If the muscle is large, knots can become as large as a person’s thumb. In a smaller muscle, pinhead sized knots may be nearly undetectable other than the ache that they cause
Sometimes they can be the result of an injury such as whiplash from an automobile accident or a sports accident. At other times, knots may occur after a workout or some other strenuous activity such as lifting heavy boxes while moving. You can also get a muscle knot from sitting or lying in the wrong position for too long. Good posture is a key to avoiding muscle knots.
What are some natural ways to relieve knots in back muscles? Massage is usually the first treatment we turn to for muscle knots. While a professional massage may be pricey, it could be tough to reach the area yourself and a loved one may lack the finger strength to work the knot out. A foam roller may help. They can be rolled over the area up to a dozen times, three times per day until the knot loosens up.
Another natural way to relieve muscle knots in the back or neck is upper cervical chiropractic. Studies have been done which show the effect that upper cervical chiropractic treatments have when pain is caused by an injury such as whiplash. Don’t think that because your knot is in your lower back that upper cervical chiropractic won’t help. When the C1 and C2 vertebrae become misaligned, the effects can be felt all over the body. This is because these vertebrae in the upper neck are right at the base of the skull where the brain stem is. Thus, seeking the help of an upper cervical chiropractic practitioner is a great, drug-free way to treat all sorts of conditions including neck and back pain.

One of NBA Basketball's most exciting players Dwyane Wade has been an integral part of the Miami Heat's success. It has been reported in the media throughout his career that he struggles with recurring migraines.
Wade says about his migraine headaches "Most of the time it lasts for four days," I do everything with the doctors, but there are certain things you can't control."
Or can you?
Is it possible that there is an underlying cause associated with your migraines Dwyane?
If you got to the underlying cause would it be possible to prevent these migraines?
Would it be possible to eliminate them completely?
Dwyane Wade is a very physical player. He frequently dives on the floor and has had several head and neck traumas over the years. Here is one example of Wade whacking his head on the ground in the playoffs a few years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3ksc5_bpYw
Well these accidents and injuries can tear loose the connective tissue that holds the spine in place and create a weakness, which then allows the spine to breakdown and lock into a stressed position.
Now I am sure that the Miami Heat have a staff Chiropractor, as almost all professional sports teams do. But to get to this problem he may need a more advanced approach than general chiropractic. He may require upper cervical.

In the June 2011 edition of the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research. Dr. Nimira Alibhoy DC presents the case of a 45-year-old female with a history of two major head traumas and 10 car accidents leading to complaints of an 11 year history of fibromyalgia. The history from the study is quite remarkable:
The patient was a 45-year-old female with Fibromyalgia. Symptoms included migraine headaches, chronic pain in the neck, upper and lower back, numbness in fingers, sciatica, right knee pain, depression, and duodenal ulcer.
She sustained a traumatic injury from diving head first into a shallow pool at the age of 15. The patient was then in 10 car accidents over 25 years.
She was later diagnosed with fibromyalgia by her medical doctor. Five years after the diagnosis, she had another traumatic head injury, when she fell head first down a flight of stairs. This increased her sciatica, neck, and back pain.
The patient had been to five general chiropractors over 12 years, who provided temporary relief of her Fibromyalgia symptoms. She was in chronic pain and suffered from depression. She was given Vicodin, Flexeril, or Soma at different times for her pain and soft tissue injuries. Her activity levels were limited in that she could not use stairs, swim, or walk further than 20 feet. She used a wheelchair as it helped her complete her daily routine and limit her tiredness.
A history of head or neck trauma should always be investigated by an Upper Cervical Chiropractor trained in the detection and correction of the Atlas Subluxation Complex (A misalignment of the top bone in the neck). This misalignment causes brain stem dysfunction which can lead to all sorts of changes in the way that all the body systems work. Specifically important in patients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia is the brain stem connection to the immune system, circulatory system, respiratory system and digestive system. Along with the connection of the brain stem with the postural muscles up and down the spinal column.
Here is the results for the patient in the study who was able to get the proper upper cervical chiropractic care needed to correct the underlying Brain Stem Subluxation.
Within six months of the first upper cervical correction, the patient revealed that she no longer needed wheelchair assistance. At the first re-evaluation, she reported that her fibromyalgia and left leg sciatica had resolved. She was able to move and perform basic daily functions and sleep in any position. She was feeling more relaxed and had more energy throughout the day. She stated that the sciatica in her right leg improved by 60% and was no longer on any medications.
At second re-evaluation, she stated that her chronic back pain and headaches had resolved. She only continued to have minor right sciatica. By the fifth re-evaluation, 6 months into care, her knee tenderness had also resolved. Her sciatica on the right had 98% improvement. She stated she was able to perform house and yard work. She was also able to swim, walk distances, and stand for long periods of time without taking Tylenol or Advil. The only complaint she had at this point was right hip pain.
Have you been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia?
Do you have a history of head or neck traumas? Car Accidents? Falls? Other Head Injuries?

Have you been experiencing strange symptoms in one of your eyes?
Seen flashing lights, suffered temporary blindness or seen patterns in your visual field?
Have you been to your medical doctor and received a diagnosis of retinal migraine?
Have you been told that medications are the only answer for your headaches?
Your migraines may be due to blood flow, and the solution may be traced to an accident or injury in your past. But what exactly is a retinal migraine? Here are five signs that you can use to tell if you have retinal migraine…
Researchers suspect decreased blood flow to the eye or optic nerve may be to blame for the unique symptoms of retinal migraine. This decreased blood flow can be a result of trauma to the upper neck. Accidents and injuries affecting the head and neck can lead to misalignments which can change blood flow from the brain to the body.
A doctor trained in upper cervical care is able to closely examine the anatomy of the upper neck with both physical examination procedures and specific x-ray protocols. By identifying these specific misalignments the upper cervical trained doctor may be able to find the missing link and underlying cause of the retinal migraine.

An injury to the neck caused by a sudden movement of the head, backward, forward, or sideways, is commonly referred to as "whiplash." While the term "whiplash" is most frequently used to describe auto accident injuries (in which a person is rear-ended, hit head-on, or hit from the side), whiplash can also frequently occur during ski accidents, bike accidents, falls, blows to the head, and other head/neck traumas.
THE MYTH: "If I don't have any symptoms right away, I'm O.K.".
THE TRUTH... After many auto and sport-related traumas, symptoms can be so slight at first, an individual may not realize he/she has been injured. Even if a person feels relatively normal after an accident, he/she should be thoroughly examined. Symptoms can be delayed for days, months, or even years.
COMMON SYMPTOMS: The following are symptoms that can occur following a head/neck injury (days to years later):
In many cases, more severe immune-related, neurological, pain, and disease conditions (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Susceptibility to Infection, ADHD, Seizures, Multiple Sclerosis) can result from head/neck injuries, sometimes occurring many years after the accident.
Two million people are exposed to whiplash injury (related to an auto accident) in the U.S. every year.
When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth or side-to-side beyond its normal limits, ligaments supporting the neck vertebrae can be sprained (over-stretched) or torn, forcing vertebrae out of their normal position.
In tests of low speed rear impact collisions, it was reported that the neck can be injured even in slow speeds accidents as low as 5 mph.
Most rear impact accidents occur at crash speeds of 6 to 12 mph - speeds below the threshold for property damage to the vehicle - but sufficient to cause neck injury.
Whiplash injuries to the cervical spine can occur in sports (skiing, hockey, football, cycling, ice skating, gymnastics, boxing), due to falls, and more!

We only get one spine, so it's important that we take as good care of it as possible. Avoid these habits because they are the top 5 ways to damage your spine.
This is the one habit that is the most harmful to the health and function of our spine and our nervous system. When the head is turned to the side and then the weight of the body is placed upon it…the muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, discs, nerves, etc. are compressed. The application of this stress of stomach sleeping will lead to an acceleration of degeneration of the discs and joints. Some of the worst degenerative disc disease that I have seen in the spine is in those that have spent their life sleeping on their belly. We spend a third of our lives sleeping!
So if you shouldn’t sleep on your stomach…how should you sleep? Flat on your back is best. Some people will find that placing a pillow underneath the knees will be more comfortable. You should always sleep with only one pillow under your head though so the neck is in a relaxed position. If you are unable to sleep on your back then the next best option is on your side. When you are sleeping on your side, you want to make sure that your head and neck are in as an aligned position as possible. You should only use one pillow that is thick enough to support between your shoulder and your head. Most people have a pillow that is too thin to sleep on your side…so there head is side bent all night. The most vulnerable position for the neck to be in is side bent or extended.
This habit, which can feel good at the time will lead to hypermobility in the joints and more and more instability over time as this habit has a tendency to make you want to do it more and more. This is a sign that your spine is probably extremely misaligned and should be evaluated asap.
Here is that vulnerable position again. A side bent head is much more likely to cause a misalignment, especially when kept in this position for 30, 60 minutes or longer why you watch TV.
The longer you sit the more your posture begins to breakdown. If you are sitting for a few minutes it is much easier to keep a good posture. When you sit for hours the chances that your posture is breaking down is very high. So tip #1 is to sit as little as possible. If you can stand to do a task then do it. A least once per hour you want to get out of your chair and walk around and change the posture that you are in…something that helps you to remember to do this is to drink lots of water…which is tip #2. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day…preferrably more. A good rule of thumb is to only drink water and drink about 1/2 of your body weight in ounces per day. So if you weigh 150 pounds then you should drink 75 ounces of water per day. The more you weigh the more you need to drink to be healthy. So if you are drinking water all day then you will need to get up and go to the bathroom which will greatly benefit your spine as well…it’s a win-win. The third tip is to change positions as much as possible when you are sitting. Change the angle of your chair, the height of your chair, move things around throughout the day. Your body gets bored sitting in the same position all the time!
The less we exercise the more the joints of the spine begin to stiffen and deteriorate. So move around! Our bodies were made to move! The best exercise is the one that you will do consistently. Fast walking, swimming, elliptical etc. Pick a cardiovascular exercise and get going.

When a 2-year-old little girl falls down the stairs what is the typical response? The parents would pick her up and check on her see if there are any notable injuries. If they were concerned about her in any way the parents would take that little girl to the emergency room and get her checked out medically. They may perform X-Rays, a Cat Scan, and other testing. If all those tests come back negative then they would release her back to her parents and tell them that she is going to be okay.
What if when she fell and hit her head the ligaments and muscles that connect the head and neck were damaged. Creating a slight misalignment at the atlas (the top bone in the spine). Once that bone is misaligned and locked out of it's normal position it creates a weakness. This weakness allows the spine to break down and lock into a stressed position. In this stressed position frequently one of the legs will appear shorter than the other when laying flat on your back. And one hip will be lower than the other when in the standing position.
Now in this new stressed position the body begins to grow. With the head slightly tilted to one side and the hips uneven that little girl hits her growth spurt at the age of 8 and a curvature begins to develop. By the time that little girl is 13 she has a 12 degree Scoliosis like the one you see in the picture.
This time the Mom of that 2-year-old little girl is a patient of a NUCCA chiropractor. So after the fall the little girl isn't sleeping well and just isn't acting like herself, she is brought into a NUCCA office to have her alignment evaluated. During the exam the little girl is found to have a one inch leg length difference!
After the exam the little girl is adjusted in her upper cervical spine. Her legs immediately level...the Mom is amazed! That night she sleeps great again and is just like herself again the next day.
Scoliosis? Ear infections? ADHD? Headaches? Digestive problems? There is no way to know for sure. But without a doubt she will now grow up a healthier girl because her spine has been restored to it's normal alignment.
The most common times for a child to develop a misalignment are after birth, when they begin to lift their head, when they begin to crawl and when they begin to walk. After those milestones a child should only be evaluated if they have had a head or neck trauma such as a fall or car crash. About 50% of the kids that are evaluated are misaligned. There will be no other time better than in childhood to correct those problems and allow that child to grow up as healthy as possible.
It is much easier to grow healthy kids than it is to repair damaged adults!

Childbirth is frequently a difficult process that can result in damage to the newborn. One example is: a child born with an injured upper cervical, the uppermost vertebra between the back of the head and the remainder of the spinal column. This injury is often the result of vacuum extraction during childbirth, or it could be due to the baby's umbilical cord wrapping around its neck.
A byproduct of this type of injury is acid reflux, a painful condition caused by liquid from the stomach draining back into and irritating the esophagus. Most associate acid reflux as a condition reserved for adults who eat heavily, however, more and more infants are receiving this diagnosis in their young lives. Symptoms of a baby with acid reflux include arching of the back, spitting up, crying after feeding, gas and refusing to feed from the breast or a bottle.
Oftentimes, mothers seek the assistance of a pediatric GI doctor, who, as it appears, simply prescribes the infant a dose of ranitidine or lansoprazole, to attempt to address the symptoms, but not correct the core of the condition.
In recent studies, though, researchers have noticed a trend that links birth injuries of the upper cervical together with acid reflux. A number of mothers of babies with acid reflux experienced a troubling child delivery, meaning that labor may have been prolonged or the fetus was in an abnormal position, both complications that often result in cesarean sections. With these observations, researchers have investigated the matter further.
In Hillary Marek's (2010) book, Understand Colic, the author cites a study reported by Dr. Erin Elster, D.C., regarding sixteen infants who had upper cervical chiropractic treatment to eliminate acid reflux disease. It was concluded that: "A casual link between birth trauma-induced upper cervical injury and the onset of acid reflux...appears to exist. Correcting the injury to the upper cervical spine through the use of IUCCA (International Upper Cervical Chiropractic Assoc.) protocol appears to reverse...acid reflux" (n.p.).
Though the study had been administered with only sixteen infants, all of them were relieved of acid reflux. The study noted that further research is needed, but with a 100% recovery outcome, it is hard to deny the work of the upper cervical chiropractic.
If you are a mother who had a difficult or prolonged labor, and your infant is suffering the symptoms of acid reflux, realize that a pediatric GI specialist will only turn to drugs. It might be wise to first consult with an upper cervical chiropractor.

The Brain stem is an extension of the brain itself that extends down into the upper neck area (upper cervical spine). The brain stem is susceptible to injury if the Atlas or Axis the top two bones in the spine are twisted or tilted as a result of traumatic accidents or injuries. Most of these injuries are to the head or neck. Examples would be car accidents, falls, diving accidents, surfing injuries, snowboarding falls, childhood falls from trees, off bikes, changing tables and more.
The common denominator is an injury that has torn loose the tissue that holds the spine in place in the upper neck which creates a weakness, which will allow the weight of the head (10-14 lbs) to become displaced from it's normal position. This misalignment of the head and neck relationship can be as little as 3/4 of degree and the brain will have to adapt to this new position. Our eyes and ears are created to be balanced. When the head is not balanced properly compensations will develop in order to rebalance the structure of the body and the eyes and ears through the righting reflex in the brain. Without this compensation we would just fall over when we stood up in a gravity environment.
The longer this compensation exists the more our body must adapt to this structural misalignment. This can lead to conditions like scoliosis or abnormal curvature of the spine.
Eventually we will develop symptoms as a result of nerve dysfunction.
Which symptoms?
That depends on the person and the nerves that are effected.
For instance the brain stem through the Vagus nerves controls the digestive system. Dysfunction here can lead to conditions like Acid Reflux, constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and colic in kids.
And what about headaches?
Headaches can be caused by both the blood flow and nerve flow changes from the brain to the body and head and face when the brain stem function is altered.
So what can happen when the brain stem pressure is removed through the correction of an upper neck misalignment by a qualified upper cervical specialist?
Amazing things!
Amanda is a patient of ours who at only 21 years of age had had several head and neck traumas beginning in early childhood. These conditions in Amanda's body where leading to a daily dependence on Tums and Advil to just get through the day.
Thank God that is all over now.
Here is Amanda's story.
“When I first came into this office I was hoping to get rid of my acid reflux, because every night when I laid down I would get it regardless of what I ate. I also headaches, terrible allergies and generalized pain and aches throughout my body.
Now only 6 weeks into my care I sleep better at night, my sinus passages are clear, my breathing has improved. No acid reflux! I haven’t had an episode in weeks. I no longer need to take the Tums or the Advil that was just normal to me before.
I am happier in general because all of my pain and discomfort is gone! My work and service to the Lord has improved, I am more willing to take the extra step and go the extra mile.
You may think that there is no cure for the problem that you are dealing with, your normal doctor may think that you are being ridiculous, but NUCCA care is the cure…at 21 years old I have never felt so good!”
Are you ready to feel good again or maybe for the first time?

One of the most difficult things a new mother can go through is to see her new baby in pain. Acid reflux in babies is a common problem that causes pain and other symptoms. The most common symptoms include excessive vomiting, cough, gagging, choking or refusing to eat, crying when eating and heartburn, gas or abdominal pain. Babies may also have colic, restricted growth, breathing difficulties, and they may have pneumonia that keeps coming back. It is a challenge for mothers and babies that is very difficult to overcome.
There are many suspected causes for acid reflux in newborns and babies, and most common treatments include acid reduction medicine. However, there is increasing evidence that birth injuries and trauma may be a possible cause. The reasons for birth injuries or trauma can include long births or extremely fast births, C-sections and posterior positioning during pregnancy and birth. Birth is a difficult process for the mother, so we often forget about the immense amount of force being put on the baby as it moves down the birth canal, leading with its head. This can put a large amount of pressure on the spine and result in misalignment which can cause acid reflux in babies.
Upper Cervical Chiropractic for Babies
Upper cervical chiropractic is a specialized branch of chiropractic care that focuses specifically on certain joints in the neck and upper spine. More and more parents are finding that their babies respond positively to upper cervical chiropractic care to for their newborns acid reflux. The correction of the misalignment can cause instant results at times. Many parents report that after treatment, their constipated babies have bowel movements and experience relief of abdominal pain.
Every medical treatment carries its own list of risks and benefits. If your baby is already on medication for acid reflux, you already know this first hand as some of your babies’ symptoms have improved while drug side effects have appeared. Many studies and organizations support the use of chiropractic for babies and children. As with anything, you should use your own judgment and be sure to do your research before committing to any particular treatment. If your baby has been diagnosed with acid reflux and you are looking for an alternative to medication, speak with an upper cervical chiropractor about your baby.
