Many patients who are in pain come to my clinic when they are in search of a Redwood City upper cervical chiropractor to help relieve their pain. What can an upper cervical chiropractor do to help shoulder pain? Read on to find out more about what’s causing your shoulder pain and how upper cervical care could help your situation.

About 18-26% of adults suffer from shoulder pain at any point in time. If you’re one of these people, there’s probably nothing else you wish for but to have a day without pain. Intense shoulder pain not only makes a person lose a night of sleep, but it can also make normal, everyday tasks challenging to deal with.

Some of the top reasons for shoulder pain are the following:

Rotary Cuff Injury

Repetitive movements of the shoulders can cause damage and injury. The tendons and muscles around the shoulders are the first to feel the impact.

Osteoarthritis

A layer of cartilage surrounds the bones for protection. Osteoarthritis occurs when this protective layer deteriorates over time.

Polymyalgia Rheumatica

This is due to inflammation in the blood vessels. This results in gradual stiffness of the muscles and shoulder pain.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

This is an extremely painful disorder that occurs due to the erosion of the lining of the joints, tearing down the bone itself.

Relieving Shoulder Pain Through Upper Cervical Chiropractic

The atlas and axis vertebrae are the topmost bones in the neck. They are right under the base of the skull. These bones are vulnerable to misalignment. Once these bones misalign, it can put the neck and shoulders under increased pressure as they compensate for the misalignment. Uneven muscle tension can lead to pain and to injuries in the neck, shoulders, and back.

I am a Redwood City upper cervical chiropractor, and I help my patients find relief from all sorts of pain, including shoulder pain related to structural imbalances. Through diagnostic imaging and other assessments, I can find out whether there is a misalignment in your upper cervical spine and provide a gentle and precise adjustment to the vertebrae. Once the vertebrae are back in correct alignment, the body can begin to heal and right itself. This often alleviates a variety pains in the neck, back, and shoulders.

Shoulder Injury, Shoulder Pain, Shoulder, Shoulder Pain Relief, Sports Injury, Car AccidentShoulder pain is something we rarely think about until it happens, and when it does, it reminds us how important our shoulders really are. Shoulder pain is a common occurrence and makes us wish we had taken better care of ourselves before it happened. Some reasons for shoulder pain are:

When your shoulders hurt, you may feel like a visit to your family physician is in order. This may be a good idea, but it should be done as the last step. A good place to begin is to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor as this may be all that is needed to help shoulder pain.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Can Help Shoulder Pain

Here at Advanced Spinal Care, we are able to successfully help our patients with shoulder pain. We focus on the top bones of the spine – the C1 (atlas) or C2 (axis). These bones are susceptible to misalignment, and when they move out of place, they can wreak havoc on the entire body, causing all kinds of health issues to ensue, including shoulder pain. Why?

The head rests on the top of the spine and relies on the atlas and axis for support. If these bones are out of alignment, the body compensates for the weight of the head by shifting and twisting the spine. This causes muscles and joints to work improperly. If the shoulder muscles are becoming stressed, it can result in shoulder pain or an irritation of the joint.

We use a gentle method that encourages the bones of the neck to realign more naturally than popping or cracking them, causing less trauma to the neck and allowing for a longer-lasting adjustment. Many times, this is all that is necessary to see an improvement in or elimination of shoulder pain.

Shoulder Pain, Shoulder Pain Relief, Shoulder Injury, Shoulder Injuries, Arm Pain, Arm Pain ReliefIf you are experiencing shoulder pain, you know how it can affect day to day activities. Even sleeping can become difficult when you are in pain constantly. If the shoulder is weak or numb, it could make normal activates, like eating, a chore.

What can cause pain in a person’s shoulder? While it may be something less serious, pain can mean a dislocation, separation, or a rotator cuff injury. It could also be a misalignment in the upper neck that is causing the shoulder discomfort. When the upper neck is misaligned, this can irritate shoulder nerves and affect the arm and hand as well.

Where can you look for natural relief of shoulder pain?

Upper Cervical Care for Shoulder Pain

At Advanced Spinal Care, we use the NUCCA method of upper cervical chiropractic to focus on the upper neck. The top bones of the spine can easily become misaligned, and this can result in shoulder pain and other side effects. How does NUCCA work?

We start with x-rays that reveal the specific location and degree of a misalignment. Rather than twisting or popping the neck, as in general chiropractic, and upper cervical adjustment is very precise and gentle. That means the relief provided is long-lasting. Many begin to feel better almost immediately after an adjustment, though some may require more time to heal. The good news is that when the alignment holds, the body has more time to heal.

So if shoulder pain is being caused by an upper neck misalignment, symptoms should be reduced and eventually be completely resolved once the body has had a chance to heal. If you want an examination to see if this kind of misalignment is the source of your pain, come in for a consultation today, and learn what NUCCA can do for you.

Shoulder Pain, NUCCA, Upper Cervical, ChiropractorThat Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can mean different things to different people. It can mean your shoulder and arm are numb or they feel weak. It can mean you feel tingling and that you're experiencing a loss of strength in them.

Though, while there are several things that can lead to a weak shoulder, knowing what type of pain you have can help determine what is causing your shoulder pain. Listed below are some of those things that may be causing your shoulder pain.

Causes of Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain and Nerve Damage

While that shoulder pain can be due to damage to the shoulder itself, it can also be due to problems in the neck that cause nerve irritation. Those nerves extend from the lower part of the neck and extend through the arm down to the hand, so nerve damage in the neck can have an impact on the shoulder and arm. That means problem in the shoulder, arm, and hands may originate in the neck.

Though, in order to discover whether or not that pain in your arms, hands, or shoulders originated in your neck, you will need to entrust your care to an upper cervical chiropractor. They will examine upper neck vertebrae for any misalignments the may have resulted in nerve damage.

If they determine there is a postural misalignment, they will take a three dimensional X-ray, so as to get the best perspective possible of your spine. Then, they will determine the best way possible to realign your spine so as to remove that nerve damage.

Many times, patients will find relief from pain and improved nerve function after only the first adjustment. It doesn't always happen that way, but the more in alignment the neck comes with the body, the more the patient will find find healing.

Upper cervical chiropractors are able to accomplish this without your popping, cracking or twisting of the spine associated with general chiropractic and other manipulative treatment because of the precision with which they work.

There are many individuals that feel relief from pain and improved nerve function almost as soon as they are placed back into normal alignment. For others this relief may take longer. Once proper alignment has been reached the upper cervical chiropractor can show the individual some things that they can do to help stay in alignment.

How Is Your Shoulder Problem Affecting Your Life?

When shoulder weakness or pain is involved even walking can be painful. Also when a shoulder is in pain simple things like eating and drinking can become miserable. In addition to these things when there is a shoulder problem every movement we make can cause the pain to increase and the injury to become worse.

Shoulder weakness and pain may also start to interfere with sleeping habits. Every movement while sleeping can be painful and cause trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Not being properly rested through the day will cause problems of its own. Shoulder problems are really something that needs to be taken care of as soon as possible.

Shoulder Pain, Shoulder Injury, Pain ReliefSustaining Shoulder Pain

If there's one thing we take for granted, it's our shoulders. That is until they begin to hurt, and we realize we should have taken better care of them all along. There are many things that can cause that pain, but over using your shoulder or using your shoulder in ways you usually don't use them are the leading causes of shoulder injuries.

Of course, it is tempting, after sustaining a shoulder injury, to go to a medical doctor, but that's not the best thing you can do. When was the last time you went to your physician and it didn't end with them either prescribing medication to you, sending you to a specialist who then prescribed medication to you, or testing you for something and then giving you medication? Seems like the medical system is a little too reliant on the pharmaceutical system, rather than getting to the source of your pain, to stay in business.

The Cause of Your Shoulder Pain

Though, the one thing the won't do is address the underlying cause of that shoulder pain, which is usually do to posture and poor body mechanics due to a misalignment in the spine. That can be the result of the position of the head being altered, thus causing one shoulder to become lower than the other. This postural imbalance can then lead to the overused or unusual activity of one of the shoulders.

Though, the underlying cause of one's shoulder pain, which is the poor positioning of the head on the shoulder, can be reversed by simply realigning the head with the body. That means realigning the upper cervical spine, which are the top two vertebrae in the spine, so the body can be in complete alignment. This will allow the body to begin to heal itself.

Should pain, muscle strain, Pain ReliefThe Underlying Cause of Your Shoulder Pain

Did you know you can injure your shoulder and not know it? Did you know you can stay injured for days, week, months, or even years; and the pain just becomes part of your daily routine? Sometimes, things we do everyday cause stress on our bodies, and that stress causes pain. That shoulder pain is the result of an injury that happened because of overuse of joints or other tissue.

When pain occurs, it happens because of a many different types of injuries. Here's a description of a few of the reasons you may have recently started feeling a gradual pain in your shoulders.

Causes of Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain Relief

Now, you will want to take back control of your life and live the pain free life you were meant to live. The best way to do that is to entrust your care to an upper cervical chiropractor. Your injury can frequently be due to a misalignment in your neck that is restricting communication from your brain to your body. That miscommunication has led to various injuries.

Though, the good news is an upper cervical specialist can realign your upper neck vertebrae. Your brain communicates with your body via the brainstem. When your upper neck vertebrae is out of alignment by just ¼ of a millimeter, that communication system is hindered. Realigning those two vertebrae, then, restores your body's communication system.

Shoulder Pain, NUCCA, Upper Cervical, ChiropractorThe Source of Your Shoulder Pain

Last time, we explored a few reasons you might be experiencing pain in your shoulders. There are many underlying conditions that might lead to that pain, and it is definitely something you will not want to ignore or think you can fix by just icing it for a few days.

Getting to the source of that pain will mean entrusting your care to specialist, who understands the interconnection of the body any how the various parts communicate with one another.

Now, there are several conditions that can lead to shoulder pain. Last week, we explored Avascular Necrosis, a Brachial Plexus injury, and Shoulder Bursitis. This time, we'll look at a few more conditions that cause shoulder pain and explain why the best way to reduce and eliminate that pain is to focus on healing your body's communication system.

Shoulder Pain

Other conditions that might lead to shoulder pain include Osteoarthritis, Polymyalgia Rheumatica, Rotator Cuff Injury, Septic Arthritis, Tendinitis, Tendon Rupture, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, and Torn Cartillage. Shoulder pain can also result from an injury, such as a break or sprain, to the arm, neck, or shoulder. We'll explore those more in upcoming blogs.

Your Shoulder Pain and Upper Cervical Chiropractic

Now that you understand a little more about what might be causing that pain in your shoulders, it's important to understand the only way to find total relief is to focus on the source of your pain. Your body was injured, and that injury disabled your brain's ability to communicate with your body, and your body's ability to function properly.

The reason for that is dysfunction within the nervous system. Misalignments in the spine can lead to disruption of nerve flow and a break down in the communication between your brain and your body. You will want to restore your body's communication system by allowing an upper cervical chiropractor to examine you to determine the root cause of your shoulder problem.

Shoulder Pain, Upper Cervical, ChiropractorThe Delicacy of Your Shoulder

Are you experiencing pain in one of your shoulders? Can you think back to a fall or collision you suffered, in which your shoulder was impacted? Your shoulder is a delicate part of your body, and injuring it is not that difficult.

Though, fixing that injury can be a little more difficult, and it will take the proper care of a trained specialist. That's why it's important that rather than just hoping the pain will go away on its own, you take the time to get to the underlying cause of the problem.

Now, there are several conditions that can lead to shoulder pain. Over the next two weeks, we will explore some of those conditions and what you can do to experience permanent relief.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain and Your Upper Cervical Spine

These are just a few of the many conditions that can lead to shoulder pain. No matter the cause of your shoulder pain, the way to reduce and eliminate that pain is the same. Whether your pain is due to Avascular Necrosis, a Brachial Plexus injury, or Shoulder Bursitis, you will want to restore the body's ability to function properly.

Though, getting to the reason your body is not functioning properly means trusting yourself into the care of a trained specialist, who can help you restore the body's communication system. The source of your body's communication system is the nervous system. Misalignments in the neck especially the upper neck can lead to disruption in normal nerve and blood flow to the shoulders. Restoring proper alignment is crucial to the health and function of your shoulders.

Shoulder pain, neck problems and upper cervical chiropractic

If you suffer from shoulder pain, which accounts for 16% of all musculoskeletal complaints, the good news is you are part of the general population. The bad news is being this part of the general population is not a good thing. There are various conditions that could cause your shoulder pain, and they are all conditions you do not want to ignore. Below is a list of those conditions, along with their definitions.

Shoulder Pain Conditions

Upper Cervical Chiropractic and Your Shoulder Pain

If you are part of the 16% of people in the U.S. who suffers from shoulder pain, you do not have to be part of the percentage that does nothing about their pain and continues to suffer from it. You also don't have to be part of that group of people who thinks the solution to their ailment is to ingest medication that will only cover the pain and not deal with the cause of the pain.

When you seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor, you are taking the right step forward to healing. Shoulder injuries frequently have to do with posture. The position of your head, neck and shoulder girdle can lead to a variety of different shoulder problems. An upper cervical chiropractor can evaluate your head, neck and spinal alignment to determine if the underlying cause may originate there.

Shoulder Pain Shoulder pain, neck problems and upper cervical chiropractic

Shoulder pain is a terrible thing to have to live with. People never realize how much their shoulders play a role in everyday living until it starts to hurt. Shoulder pain can be caused by many things but the most common causes are overuse or doing activities that are not usually done.

Some individuals when suffering from shoulder pain will go to a medical doctor. Frequently the result of that visit will be sending you home with some sort of over-the-counter or prescription pain or anti-inflammatory medication. Often the pills will help with the pain, but they won’t fix the root of the pain.

An underlying cause of shoulder problems can be related to posture and poor body mechanics as a result of misalignments in the spinal column. If the position of the head is altered as a result of accidents or injuries, the shoulders will frequently be tilted. Sometimes you can see this postural change in the mirror where one shoulder is lower than the other. This postural imbalance can lead to overuse or straining of the shoulder with unusual activity.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic

Going to an upper cervical chiropractic clinic is an excellent way to seek the underlying cause of your shoulder problems. An upper cervical chiropractor will look for postural imbalances that may be leading to your shoulder dysfunction. Misalignments in the spine can also lead to nerve irritation and nerve related numbness, tingling and pain in the shoulder and arm.

An upper cervical chiropractor is able to correct these underlying postural imbalances without any of the popping, cracking or twisting of the spine common with general chiropractic manipulation. Because the upper cervical approach is non-traumatic to your spine, it leads to maximum recovery for misaligned joints and structures.

Upper Cervical Chiropractors also have a large knowledge of exercises that can help to strengthen the muscles that will support the alignment and help keep it in place. There are many individuals that have felt instantly better after going to an upper cervical chiropractor.

Shoulders are used every day and when they hurt it certainly will get our attention. Injuries rarely happen at a convenient time, but it is important that we respect pain signals. To see the underlying cause, rather than just covering up the symptoms will lead to less problems down the road.
