sinus-problems-linked-health-issuesIn the U.S alone, nearly 29.4 million adults have been diagnosed with sinusitis. Those living in the U.S spend $5.8 billion every year on treatment for sinus problems. If the fluid does not drain properly out of the sinuses, it leads to numerous health problems such as colds, increased allergies, and tiredness.

There are various forms of care available. Decongestants, neti pots, nasal steroid sprays, and herbal remedies are only a few. Nearly 500,000 people annually resort to surgery to get relief from their symptoms.

The Root of Sinus Problems

Researchers have discovered that many sinus problems are misdiagnosed and actually have a root cause in the head or neck. Recent studies show that many people have fatigue and pain in connection with their sinus issues. A group of 297 sinus patients reported that 22% of them also had unexplained chronic fatigue, while 11% had unexplained chronic pain, and 9% experienced both. What was found to be the cause? The results showed a link to misalignments in the upper neck.

How Upper Cervical Misalignments Occur

When someone has an auto accident or experiences trauma to the head or neck, the connective tissue can be damaged. Because the upper neck is the most flexible, it is vulnerable to more problems. The flexibility of the upper neck is good when you need to turn your head, but it’s not so good when you experience a misalignment.

The C1 and C2 are the uppermost vertebrae of the neck. A misalignment of either of these can put pressure on the brainstem and cause it to no longer function properly. One of the effects this can have is dysfunction of cortisol release. This leads to chronic fatigue and sinus problems.

A medical doctor, chiropractor, and a psychiatrist got together to study this. They concluded that when the upper neck was adjusted back into proper position, the patient's overall health improved significantly. Cortisol readings normalized over a 6-month period. As a result, the patients experienced a decrease of chronic fatigue, sinus, and chronic pain symptoms. In summary, an adjustment to the upper cervical area of the neck can help your overall health and lead to a happier and healthier life.

Sinus, Sinus Relief, Sinus Problems, Sinus Pressure, Chronic Fatigue, Sinus Infections, Congested A recent study revealed a connection between those suffering from chronic pain conditions, sinusitis, and problems such as chronic fatigue. The study was conducted at Georgetown University Medical Center and included 297 people that fell into the following categories:

Interestingly, sinus problems were seen in the majority of these people, especially in those with unexplained fatigue. Why is this significant?

The Underlying Cause of Sinus Problems

Sinus problems have been linked to a misalignment in the bones of the upper cervical spine. In particular, a problem in the top two bones of the neck (C1 and C2) can be to blame as they can place undue stress on the brainstem, causing it to send improper signals to the brain. A misalignment of only ¼ of a millimeter can cause a number of serious health problems throughout the body. When the neck is misaligned due to previous trauma, such as a vehicle accident or a trip and fall, the connective tissue of the spine breaks down and locks the spine into a position of stress. The weight of the vertebrae pulls the muscles down and causes the entire spine to shift out of place. This leads to such problems as reduced fluid flow to the brain and sinus issues.

Both of these conditions can be improved by seeking the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. Sinus Problems, Sinus, Sinus Relief, Chronic FatigueSinus problems are not at all easy to deal with. They affect many people. One thing these people have in common is that they are regularly feeling congested or are experiencing sinus infections that may last for long periods of time, even years. The reason for this is that the sinuses are not draining properly when a person has a cold, the flu, or allergies. Other symptoms that go along with this are pain and extreme tiredness.

Medical doctors try to help their patients by prescribing decongestants, antihistamines, and nasal steroids. This costs $5.8 billion a year! Another option available is sinus surgery. About 500,000 people have chosen this to treat their sinuses in the USA. This can lead to complications if a person is not diagnosed correctly. Sometimes what appears to be a sinus problem is actually a misdiagnosed headache syndrome. This is true in as much as 90% of cases.

A Link to Chronic Fatigue?

A study performed at the Georgetown Medical Center revealed that there is a possible connection between unexplained body pain, fatigue, and sinus problems. This is something that had not previously been discovered. In this study, 297 patients were involved. Of them, 22% had chronic fatigue, 11% had chronic pain, and 9% had both chronic fatigue and pain. The discovery made was that one underlying problem among them was chronic sinus problems.

What Can Help Sinus Problems?

While this is very interesting information, a person may be wondering what can be done. One simple solution is to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. We specialize in making sure the vertebrae of the neck are in proper alignment. If they are not, undue pressure may be being placed on the brainstem. This can cause all kinds of problems in the body. The sinuses may not be draining properly due to such a misalignment. Once corrected, our patients have reported a vast improvement in symptoms of sinus problems, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain.
