Fibromyalgia - Diagnosing and Treating

Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Chronic Pain, Always TiredFibromyalgia can be difficult to treat as there is no known cause or test that will confirm or deny it. However, according to the American College of Rheumatology, there are tender spots at certain points of the body that can help to determine if a person is suffering from fibromyalgia. Where are these spots?

Tender Points of Fibromyalgia

  • Where the head and neck meet: occipital
  • The bottom of the neck: lower cervical
  • The upper chest area: anterior second rib
  • The muscle that runs from the neck to your shoulders: trapezius
  • A specific muscle in the shoulder: supraspinatus
  • The hips: greater trochanter
  • The buttocks: gluteal
  • The elbow: lateral epicondyle
  • The knees

Many assume that widespread pain in the body indicates fibromyalgia. While this may be true in some cases, it is vital that a person gets a thorough examination as pain can be symptomatic of other conditions. If the pain is felt in the areas mentioned above, it may well be fibromyalgia that a person is suffering from. What may cause fibromyalgia?

There are a number of theories. It's possible that a decrease in blood flow throughout the body leads to fatigue and weakness. Fibromyalgia may be lying dormant in the body, and a trauma of some sort may trigger it to become active. It is also a possibility that a virus may cause fibromyalgia to occur.

Upper Cervical Chiropractors Can Help

We are specifically trained to look for misalignments in the upper neck area. If one is found here, it is possible that it is hindering blood flow and communication between the brain and body. Improper signals may be being delivered, leading to symptoms of fibromyalgia. A misalignment of only ΒΌ of a millimeter can cause this. By bringing this area back into alignment many patients have seen a decrease in the intensity of fibromyalgia and, in some cases, have had the condition fully resolve.
