The Four Stages of Migraines

Neck injuries and dizziness

If migraine headaches were a form of entertainment, they'd be a really bad broadway musical. You know the kind you read poor reviews about, cringe during the musical performances, and can't seem to get the songs out of your head. Migraines don't always but sometimes happen in phases. Those phases can start up to 24 hours before the headache begins and last for days after the actual headache.

Migraine Headache Stages

Prodrome Phase – These are symptoms that occur before the headache and only effects 60% of sufferers. This stage can start anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days before the Aura stage. Symptoms may include altered mood, irritability, depression and euphoria, fatigue, stiff muscles, food cravings, constipation or diarrhea, or sensitivity to smells or noise.

Aura Phase – This is a transient neurological phenomenon that happens during or just before a migraine occurs, begins gradually, and usually lasts less than 60 minutes. This only affects a little more than a third of Migraine sufferers. People who have migraines with aura may experience partial blindness, zigzag lines, blurring, a sensation of pins and needles, numbness and tingling, speech difficulty, dizziness, hallucinations, or loss of motor function.

Pain Phase - This is the stage of the actual headache, and it also usually begins gradually. The pain can be moderate to severe, but physical activity can worsen the pain. Those who do not go through the aura stage before or during this stage commonly experience neck pain. This stage lasts anywhere from four to 72 hours.

Postdrome Phase – When a migraines ends, the effects may linger. Symptoms during this stage may include soreness where the headaches occurred, impaired thinking, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, mood changes, and weakness.

After the Migraine

If you suffer from these debilitating headaches, you don't need to live with the pain any longer. An upper cervical specialist can examine your neck to determine if a misalignment in your upper neck vertebra may be the culprit of your Migraines. Upper neck misalignments have been shown to lead to migraine headaches and can only be corrected by an upper cervical specialist trained in specialized procedures.
